Hey guys...
Well I got the pajero back from my mechanic on wednesday after he had he for 2 and a half weeks...
For a long while now the idle has been dodgy and she has been running a bit rough even after
services...I put it down to that she was just starting to get old and nearing the end of her day.. 325tho on the clock..
So when I drove to NSW in her in August, the idle was still crappy and she sounded somewhat '
putty'. I thought I might have copped a small hole in the exhaust somewhere from the drive.. So I come back from NSW, drive on out to
St George.. she still never let me down, but for a while now has struggled with power and keeping up... So I get back from St G and my neighbour was fixing up the spotty wiring and I was talking how I think there has got to be a hole somewhere and he has a listen and says 'nahhh, I reckon you might have done a valve'.. I didn't want to hear that so I denied it and went off to the exhaust
shop... he comes back shaking his head.. I told him don't tell me, I don't wanna hear it! he told me... had done a valve he reckons..
So off to my mechanic (Paul Geary Automotive on
Kingston Rd at Slacks
Creek.. he does a number of us EO'ers and is the best mechanic ever!)
Yep.. had burnt valves and done the job good... so she has had a total top end rebuild and is now good as new! (bottom was fine) $2387.00
Wow! I had gotten so use to driving her sounding like crap and running so rough that now hearing her running and driving on all 6 cylinders not 4 is really weird! Have got another good lot of years ahead now. And she has all her gutz and power back finally. yayyy...

I was waiting for it! Good work! you got in before Kev or Goldie!
Hope all is
well with you.
It was more sensible to me to rebuild then get rid of it... am pleased I stuck to my guns against husband and made the right choice.

Hi Joe , you didnt mention your model but I have a NF 1989 and on the way home from WA with the van, I had the same symptons, it turned out to be a burnt valve but it was caused by a valve guide becoming loose in the head when it warmed up and dropping down and holding the valve open, they replaced all the guides and two valves ( EX) and it is as good as new .
has only done 250.000ks ,
They did both heads and the valve stem seals need doing anyway, and it was $19865.00 including some new hoses etc .
happy with the old girl .
Cheers Des,

I don't remember everything Paul said, bad memory but I know he replaced all valves and injectors, not just what was 'broken'..rebuilt her all new. I am more than happy with what I paid because I trust Paul's work 200%. I know if something went wrong I can go back to him and I won't get any 'oh it was fine when you drove out of the
shop'...he knows that car inside out and his workmanship and communication is
well worth paying that bit extra!..
My paj is a 93 NH.
The paj is all sorted now.. now to work on the GQ..

Hi, Joe , I wasn't into comparing the pricing , but was interested if it may have been the same problem , as you had the injectors replaced , they are expensive it would account for the diff,
I am a mechanic (30 years) but since retiring I don't have the facilities to do big jobs any more, but being in the trade I knew who in town did good work at a reasonable price.
I am just happy knowing the old girl is in good nick and I am happy to head off anywhere , outback or interstate with the van with out worrying .
Hope you get many more Ks and much pleasure from the Paj.
Cheers Des.

Yep! happy as to have her back!
It was more sensible for me to get the top end rebuilt and get some more good years out of her because of the money that has been spent on it, knowing the vehicle and body being good, no rust blah blah... It was never a thought to me to get rid of her. I have always had total trust in this vehicle, and am more than happy to take her anywhere! Wanna get her k's onto half a mil now! just 175tho to go!

Jo,
It maybe would have been cheaper with a couple of Triton heads from the wreckers. We had a Paj 3ltr about 5 years ago and did exactly that when after 280thou on LPG the valves decided to say enough. Total cost of job was $900 including labour, and mechanic had bought the whole motor and sold the bottom end to the speedway guys as they use the Mitsi 3 ltr motors with different heads.
I know its to late for your's maybe food for thought for anyone else with the same problem.

Its a horrible thing to say Miss Jo,
But I totally agree with. Good mechanics that you can trust are like rocking horse ####. Very Very Scarce, lots of rip off merchants out there.
Anyway Glad to hear the Mitsi Magic is breathing better, least you can still ride in comfort.
