Hi Ray,
I'm not from down that way but do travel parts of the route you're looking at often.
The road from Calliope through to
Many Peaks is Bitumen all the way now. A nice stop is the
Many Peaks Pub. From
Many Peaks the road turns to Gravel most of the way to
Kalpowar. There is a range you'll need to climb, which is quite steep but bitumen, about 20km South of
Many Peaks.
Camp ground at
Kalpowar State Forest allows pets, but only has
toilets and non-drinkable water. It's approx 45km to
Monto from
Kalpowar. Another pub 20 km or so past
Kalpowar that's intrigued me but I haven't made it there yet which I believe allows camping. Then onto
Monto, down through
Ban Ban Springs and to
Goomeri. There's a nice little coffee
shop on the right hand side in the centre of town just after the rail crossing that's worth a stop too. If you've got the time, the Pub is from out of the 20's and there's a number of signposted sights on the way down that I've always wished I had the time to look in on.
You can either peel to the left in town and head as suggested about 3-6 km out of town then turn right to the
Kinbombi falls, this road is bitumen but is winds over a few hills, the falls are on a road to the left. Beyond the turn off to the falls you turn right at a T-
Junction to find your way back to the Murgon-
Kilcoy road at the Manumbar
cross roads. Or turn left, then 200 m or so turn right onto Brimms road which takes you into the Gallangowan Forestry area. Plenty of room for camping there, but not sure if the showers/
toilets etc... are open all the time. Both these options will pop you back out on the road to
Kilcoy.
The other option from
Goomeri is to continue straight ahead, then turn left just out of town towards Nanango, and then another 20 or so km turn left again onto the
Goomeri-
Kilcoy road, most of this way from here to Jimna is gravel, but I must admit it's the less interesting route.
Cheers Anthony.
