Hi
We (4 adults) are planning to travel from Perth up to Port Hedland along the coastal route and then back along the in-land route in December. I have listed the planned overnight stops and would appreciate any advice on accomodation options for them.
As I am traveling with the olds something comfortable (ideally 2 bedroom self-contained) would be preferable.

Night 1 - Geraldton (Intown apartments ?)
Night 2 - Monkey Mia (Monkey Mia Dophin Resort ?)
Night 3 - Carnavon (Best Western ?)
Night 4 - Coral Bay (Ningaloo Reef Resort ?)
Night 5 - Coral Bay (Ningaloo Reef Resort ?)
Night 6 - Exmouth (Potshot resort ?)
Night 7 - Karratha (Karratha Apartments ?)
Night 8 - Tom Price (Karkini Eco Retreat ?)
Night 9 - Tom Price (Karkini Eco Retreat ?)
Night 10 - Meekatharra (Auski inland motel ?)

Thanks for all your invaluable tips and advice as always :o) !

We tried to just camp at Monkey Mia in early January but it was booked out so had to camp at Denman about 15-20kms away. Pretty busy at Coral Bay as well. So my advice is to book early. I don't know about the more civilised options by I reckon if you can't even camp there then there won't be much else either?

Its really nice through there, you will have a good time.

The top level chalets at Lighthouse Caravan Park are selfcontained and have stunning views from large decks for probably similar prices to the Potshot? - see http://www.ningaloolighthouse.com/. However the facilities themselves are basic'ish and not of resort standard. It depends on your prefs; we'd alway prefer the LCP over a resort style.

Re Meeka, we always stay at the Auski - motel accomm is average there but is OK. Other Meeka options don't appeal much.

Cheers.

Myoelements,
Given that school breaks up on about 17th Dec this year, i think you should be booking your accommodation fairly soon.

You are aware, I presume, of the likely day and night temperatures at that time of year as these may well have a bearing on the welfare of your "olds" (depending on how old your "olds" are) once you get north of Geraldton and/or Carnarvon.

Can I suggest that you google all the proposed stopover towns on your route to check out the accommodation available (Town Visitor or Information Centres are a good place to start with on the web).

Hope this helps.

Disco.

Thanks Disco. The olds are in their 60s, fit and agile. They are escaping the freezing winter in Europe so would welcome the 40+ degree temperatures. Will also make sure the airconditioning is working in the 4WD :o)

Hi myoelements,

At Tom Price you list Karkini Eco Retreat. Do you mean Karijini Eco Lodge ?

If so, do you know the cost ? The cabins may be ok but the camp area was the absolute pits when I was there last July and the cabins are rather expensive !

Tom Price is not far away from Karijini, I would stay there instead. I could not recommend the Eco Lodge.

PS. If you do mean Karijini Eco Lodge check out their web site;

"IMPORTANT NOTE - THE RESTAURANT WILL NOT BE OPERATIONAL DURING THE LOW SEASON 1st NOVEMBER TO 31st MARCH DUE TO THE EXTREME CLIMATIC CONDITIONS AND THE REMOTE LOCATION".

When we were there a few months ago the road in was so corrugated you needed headlights on to see out of them

Tented chalets I believe were $240 a night.

As stated the rest looked the pits

Denham has much nicer views than Monkey Mia.

One night at Coral Bay is enough and fit in a night at Kalbarri which is far nicer.

Think there has already been a thread on this trip

myoelements, as Kiwi Kia says don't! Also bare in mind that temperatures could be 40 degrees plus. Taint nice wandering around canyons etc. in those temperatures, no-matter how fit you are.
Stay in Tom Price. Karijini is not that far away.
To ensure accomodation book now at the C/van park or Motel.

Ther are a couple of Motels in Tom Price and a Dining room that is the miners eatery which has excellent food Lots of it and a great selection for $19 each for dinner includes steaks and fish cooked to order
$9 for lunch and $6 for b/fast Not a flash place but clean and beaut food.

Is called Widawarri Lodge turn right after the visitor centre.
Think it has accomodation as well.

Would suggest you all take a tour of Karajini NP with the local tour company who have a renowned name
$135 each but still cheaper than stuffing a couple of tyres.

We did it and it was informative and interesting and we saw much more than we woud have on our own. lasts from 7.30 am till 5.45pm and worth every penny

Kalbarri was almost as good Great gorges and easy short walks to the lookouts which are wheelchair friendly as well.

Great whale watching from the cliffs as well,
plenty of places to stay.
Cheers

As Tony & Graham and I have already said, stay at Tom Price if you do have to go up there at that time of the year. Other then the so called "Eco Lodge" (toilet paper everywhere in the scrub around the camp) there is no other place to stay at Karajini other then in a camper, tent or swag. There is a CP at Tom Price that has cabins. Seriously though do you really want to be in that area at that time of the year ? There are heaps of nice touring places a lot closer to Perth (& the cooler coastal area).

Thanks for the suggestions, will stay at Tom Price. Unfortunately this is the only time of year we are all free to travel so there is not much choice. It's better to get out there and see this beautiful country at some time than not see it all !
We are doing the coastal route on the way up and would appreciate any accomodation recommendations for Geraldton/Carnavon...
Thanks for all the wise words !

gidday

At the risk of repeating myself and others Denham better than Monkey Mia (and if you want to see dolphins Bunbury might be a better bet too). Tradewinds Seafront apartments in Denham are recommended.
