Hi, I am thinking of taking some of my grandkids and crossing the Simpson early April 2010 (NSW school holidays) - east to west. Would that be OK for that time of year or would it still be too hot? Appreciate some advice. Cheers Fred (L)

Hi Fred
It is still very early in the crossing season, the dunes will be blown over in many places and very soft sand if it has not received any recent rain. Day time temperatures will still hot, high 30's and low 40's. You will need very low tyre pressures and be prepared for many soft sand boggings.

To enjoy the desert better, leave it for a month or so when conditions are better.

Cheers

Stephen

Hello Fred

Probably not too hot but there will have been little traffic and the dune crests might still be quite soft with up to a metre of drift sand.

But I am sure you can handle it :-) Its all an adventure.

Hoe gaan dit, long time no see. Missed you in St George :-(
Looks like April might be a bit early - the holidays begin early April.

Fred,

April can be very hot in the desert. It is also the start of the tourist season and with very little traffic the dune and tracks might be hard to drive.

I have found in previous years that the July school holidays (NSW) are a better time for a crossing.

Fred we did the trip a couple of years ago after spending Anzac day in Birdsville. We also had two of our Grand-children with us and they loved it other than the flies and they were 4 and 7 at the time. The weather was kind and while warmish during the day was quite cool at night without being cold. As stated, the tops of some dunes were a bit soft and a couple of the less experienced drivers did have some troubles but learned as we went and all had a really good trip. Adjust your pressures to suit and you will have a great time.
Regards,
Ray

Hello again Fred, much will depend on the summer season - whether there is rain, and how the winds have been blowing and from which way! You don't mention whether other vehicles will be with you - at that time of the year it would be a good idea to have more than one. Best holidays, as mentioned above, would be the July ones - brilliant weather out there then. Quite often it is too hot in April for southerners - I'm not trying to be patronising either. Can give you a much better idea in about February.

Thanks for all your input. I guess early April is pushing it a bit. July would be great but I have other arrangements and was hoping to sneak in a few weeks in April.
Cheers
