Hi all,

In thread 62659 there was a lot of discussion about tyre pressure monitors including Tyre Dog, Jette and Schraeder.

One response from Roback in the 62659 thread mentioned that the Schraeder was doing well. Has anyone any updates on how reliable these or any other units are?

Bonz,

I give the sensatyre a big thumbs up. I have been using it for three years now (Internal clamp type sensors) and it's been fantastic. No error readings, no dodgy wireless so constant reception. Mind you I wouldn't be using butane to reseat a tyre!

Hi Mick,

The Sensatyre internal type seem to come with 4 transmitters.
How do you manage your spare wheels?

Alan, they come in four and six wheel configurations. You can also get a set for a truck (12 wheels and greater). Using a plug repair system, I am usually able to maintain the same tryes on the vehicle in most cases. I will be investing in the 6 sensor unit for the new rig.

Over the past few weeks I've been running two Tyredog systems in my Cruiser. One for the vehicle, one for the van.

They are the type that has the transmitter screwed on to the valve stem.

So far they have worked fine. Sometimes they take a few minutes to latch on to the signal from the wheels but that happened with a Jette system I had a couple of years ago.

I've found the Tyredog very easy to set up and all of the little transmitters are individually coded to their specific wheel and to its receiver. The two systems do not interfere with each other.

I'll try to get a photo up of how I've set them up in the Cruiser.

I bought them on Ebay from a crowd in Taiwan for half the Aussie price.

So just the car one's are OK for the van, as I can't have any thing inside the wheel on the LC, the van is single axle with solid rims. if I got a set of six and one monitor it would be fine?

looking at there web site $399.00 = 4 wheels $649.00 = 6 wheels & $795.00 for 4 wheels plus trailer and relay.

what you describe would be fine for both the car and the van.

My van is a tandem wheel setup and thay transmit fine from it to the car.

I'm afraid I'm a bit of a softroader these days and I doubt if my vehicle will see anything rough and tough. I did that years ago in my 80 series and these days if I can't find somewhere nice at the end of the day to enjoy a glass of white I'm not doing my job properly.

For instance, here we are today on the banks of the Gwydir River near Bingara in NSW:

It looks idyllic but it's 37 degrees and a bit of a crowd scene compared to what I expected. Mrs Bush and I have been sitting in our camp chairs in the middle of the river to cool off.

It seems that everywhere on our way home is going to be hot.

It's very, very nice Mark.

So well built. I splurged and put the auto sat dish on the roof. I can't resist going outside and watching it find the satellite, doing its own little dance on the roof with a final flick of the LNB to get the correct skew.

It's like it has a life of its own. I feel like I should put a white glove on the LNB and play Billy Jean real loud while it's doing its thing... a real moon walk.

We've brought our Foxtel box from home so we can see the ABC News from WA and all the repeats of Sex & the City that I can take. And that's ALL of them. lol.

Anyway, thread hijack... but I love the van.

I fitted Tyredogs last year, just before going across the Simpson. One sender unit failed on that trip. The distributor insisted on a full replacement, even tho I would have been quite happy with just a new individual sender. Absolutely no problems since, including another trip across the Simpson ( and thus a few k's of corrugations, gibber and other delights).
I had one puncture last year, and I was able to stop the vehicle before the pressure fell below 20psi. Result: simple puncture repair, no question of blow out. No punctures since, so they must work!!
Seriously, I'm satisfied.

I've had Tyredogs on two big trips and both sets have failed. They don't like corrugations. Don't use them if you plan going on the serious tracks.

The importer have replaced them both times but they are strictly for round town use now.

Thanks for the follow up Chris and Peter, it seems like what to do is a bit of a raffle.

Chris you have had reasonable success and Peter you haven't.

A mate of mine used TDs x 4 on a PC about two months ago and did about 1500 kms of dirt, with lots of it rough stuff - they performed well and saved at least one tyre. He did however have problems to start with but the supplier replaced bits and pieces and now his are going well.

Hi,
I have had the Jette ones for about a year and I am not impressed.

I had to replace the 6 batteries (2 for camper) within the first few months after a fair amount of problem diagnosis which went on for a couple of months. From memory I don't think they ever worked properly before then.

I also bought a booster but it did not help.

After replacing the 6 batteries (at $5 a pop) it did work OK for the next 6 months. Just recently I was getting similar error messages being displayed as before so I bought another 6 batteries but this has not fixed the problem. I suspect the 6 sensors no longer work and I am not prepared to buy new ones.

I reckon I could have replaced two tyres for the what it has cost me.

So over all I am not impressed.

Blimey, I dunno.

After reading here and thread 62659 I reckon picking a winner would be harder than picking the Melbourne Cup!

Seems a great idea but think I might wait a bit longer.

Alan I agree its a real diffcult one. I do like the idea though.

I do lots of rough stuff and nowadays its rare if any of my tyre lasts until they are worn out. They usually have suffered numerous punctures are destroyed long before then. Hence my quest to get a little bit of warning via a TPMS so I can stop before wrecking a tyre that may only have been staked in a minor way.
