Does anyone know what the stretches of bitument are that are appearing on these tracks. We counted 5 lots between 5 and 8 kilometres long on the Strez between Montecillina Bore and Lyndhurst and one between Lyndhurst and Marree.

Is it a slow attempt to resurface the road or are they trial sections to see how it works?

Thanks

Pete

Actually I see the smiley but that is true. They are overtaking lanes according to a report I saw somewhere.

Probably Golden Arches or KFC at the end of each one

Most likely as a result of the local politician responding to complaints about the pot-holes and dust. Yes there is an election in SA early next year. Simply amazing just what they can achieve when there's something in it for THEM.

Oh yee of little faith! They are actually to facilitate safe overtaking on outback roads. As the ever increasing amount of traffic on the Strez, and in particular, heavy vehicxle traffic, the bitumen sections provide a safe passing opportunity. While some may lament the bitumenisation of our outback highways, these high use roads are probably in need of it.

Cheers Mick

Yep, just like it's been for ages on the Broken Hill - Tibooburra Road. Gives you an opportunity to see what's ahead without having to peer through the dust of the guy in front of you. If you are patient enough to wait till you get to one of these stretches it is certainly safer.

Pete

The Strzelecki (note spelling) Road will be eventually bituminised to the Queensland Border due to the amount of heavy transport using the road to service the petroleum industry. Hearsay is that it might be fully sealed by 2014.

That makes sense Willem, Queensland has almost got the bitumen to the SA/QLD border on the adventure way NE of Innamincka. This was last week:

Our first black road in 10 days and it was a surprise.

And sorry about the misspelling of Strzelecki - you would think that having driven it both ways I would have picked that up - but then there weren't many street signs out there to remind me!

We had a great time however we misspelt it ;o)

Cheers

Hi Guys

I read an article recently about the Strzelecki Track being bitumen from Lyndhurst to Moomba within the next few years. The Mooba Gas Company is doing it so that when it rains, the roads trains can still get through.

Such a shame however, that's progress for you - whether we like it or not.

Better get out there before all the tracks are lost to the dark side!

:-)

Lovin' it!
