Hi all, have discovered a problem with the air con in the Prado. The missus was always complaining that it was always warm and asking to turn up the air con. I was always freezing cold in the drivers
seat, until the other day when i rode shotgun, i discovered that the passenger side air con was hardly even working. Its bizzare, the drivers side is cold as, yet the passenger side is pretty much just like having the fan on with no compressor. The volume of air coming out is the same as the driver side, but its warm air not cold.
Can anyone shed some light on what could be the problem. Whaen the heater is on, hot air comes through both side vents the same. I dont understand how this could work. I would of thought that the cold air is distributed to each vent from one outlet, and therefore cold air should be flowing from each vent the same temperature.
By the way its a 04 GXL Prado, without rear air con.
Cheers

Perhaps something like this would reduce "hot air" on the passenger side of the vehicle?

Sorry mate, I can't really offer any useful suggestions...
Does your car have separate temperature/climate-control settings for driver and passenger? (Sorry if that's an insultingly simple question).
Has it always been like that or just recently started? Perhaps it's a design thing with the position of the heat exchanger in the duct - perhaps the air doesn't flow as
well from the a/c unit to the passenger side.
Try moving all the controls - perhaps something like the recirc/fresh damper is in the way?
Seems strange if you're still getting same volume of air on both sides - perhaps try closing the vents on the driver's side and see if there's any difference?

Nah no seperate temperature controls or anything, just basic aircon.
I dont need one of them
seat belts, i need one that wiill keep the missus awake. I wish she would do some talking when travelling.

the evap is in the centre of the dash so i would suggest the mixing flap of the heater box is stuck to passenger side, it may be on the passenger side the recirculation flap has somethong stuck in it.

I guess this involves pulling the dash apart?

It can be a blend flap problem but another thing to look at is that if the car has not had the AC serviced it could be low on gas which will not enable the evaporator to fill with gas. This allows warm spots in the evaporator and depending on the design of your evaporator can cause the type of problem that you are having. Some falcons have your problem and a regas fixes it. I suggest that you have the AC serviced and see what happens and if is low on gas that they find the leak and fix it. Hope this helps.
cheers Murray
PS regas cheaper than blend flap job

Righto, probably not a bad idea to get a pro to look at it. But at $120/hr, and for backyard results im not too keen on the air con guy i used before. Best trying a new joint i think.
Car is only 5 years old though, and drivers side is cold as. My previous car was nearly 20 years old, air con was never touched till 3 weeks after i sold it to a mate. He took it to air con guy, got it serviced and now it barely gets cold and doesnt cycle on/off. Told him if it aint broke dont fix it, was icy cold before but cycled on/off little too often for long trips.

Hi Kroozer
Try Greg at Acclaim Auto Electrics 9275 8778 - he has been spot on with trouble shooting my air con problems and prices are very reasonable.
His work quality is excellent and so far seems to seen it all before and goes straight to the problem.
I also used to go to another guy but found him getting expensive and his work quality started to deteriorate.
cheers
Phil
