Hi,
Found that my motor was pinging a little under load so did a
check on the timing on the weekend and found that the vacuum advance wasn't working. In the end I found the problem was a T.V.V. valve which is part of the antipollution gear. Not a good design, this valve can bleed off or draw in air as required when the vehicle is warming up, direct to the bottom of the carbie. It should have a foam filter in the top but over the years it had broken down. Nothing mentioned in the manual about it being a serviceable item and needing changing. However it does need changing. When it breaks down it stops the small pistion in the valve from sealing and the vacuum needed to advance the ignition is bypassed to other antipollution gear. For all those 3.0l petrol patrol owners would be a good idea to
check the operation of the valve, the vacuum advance and replace the foam in top of the valve.
