Could someone tell me how the drum brake works on Warn
winches.I have been giving
mine a test run on
the bench and the drum is getting hot on powering out very quickly. Its possible the brake is dragging because the motor sounds like it is labouring.Seems to be ok on powering in and it free
wheels ok on free spool.Maybe its always done this as its an
old winch and I have never used it on power out before. Thanks for any suggestions.

My winch is a 9000lb warn and when I pulled it apart to clean and service it found no brake at all, it relies on the gear train to act as a brake and the motor drag without power is sufficient tolock the drive. Barnray

For detailed instructions on rebuilding a Warn 900lb winch including the right way of retensioning the brake have a look at the page on the "Other" link on here.
