13 March 2010 MODSQUAD UPDATE: Info from OZ Escapes website:

Scam warning - we don't make unsolicited calls!

We have recently received a number emails and calls from the general public who claim to have been contacted by OzEscapes (or representatives thereof) offering a 'deal' on accommodation that we provide.

This is a typical account of what is on offer from the scammer:

1.It is OzEscapes 25th aniversary and you have been selected as one of the lucky 25 recipients from the state of NSW/QLD/VIC (etc) who can take up this offer.
2. OzEscapes will pay 95% and you as the lucky recipient, will only pay 5% of all accomadation costs (not including meals or airfares). The offer is available for 2 Adults and 2 Kids but any of your friends could also take up the offer.
3.You can stay anywhere in Australia at 5 star hotels and duration of stay can either be 15 consectutive days or any combination of datys up to 15 days in any 1 year..
4. You are assured that Oz Escapes is a very reputable company but you will hav e to use your credit card/visa card to secure this limited offer.
5. Pay 5% of $4,500 (somehow this adds up to $399) after which you will recieve a letter which would guarentee your stay anywhere, anytime, in one year.

Please note: THIS IS A COMPLETE SCAM. If anyone calls you reporting to be a representative of OzEscapes, please hang-up the phone. We don't make any marketing calls! The caller will usually have an American-Asian accent and will have the name of "Jennifer Martin", "Mark", "Ryan", etc. The quality of the call will be very bad too.

If their number does register on your phone, please forward this to us, so that we can pass it onto the ACCC.

If you have any queries or believe you have also been contacted by these scammers, please let us know. Please note that this has been reported to Scamwatch, which is run by the ACCC. You can report your own account here.

Whatever you do, please do not give them any personal details such as name, address or bank account details.

Best Regards,

Erwin & Christine

Hi xcat

Some of these deals are genuine, but you must use them prior to xmas or after Feb.

The idea of the phone calls are to sell unused rooms at a certain time frame or provide a financial base for the coming season.

I haven't heard of this mob before but suggest that you check out their web site, their contact details and when their website was first published.

Cheers

**Ring up a Motel you may be interested in on there site and enquire if they know anything about them... **

Thought my idea was better than ringing them, they could say anything,Isnt it better ringing established Motels on there website that they claim to represent?????

Did you have a look at the site? On their front page they offer 15 nights for $399 plus other so called specials.
Incidentally Trend Micro went from green to grey on that site. Indicating it was an unknown quantity.

Here is the catch - from their terms and conditions:

"Enjoy a great meal - and get the room for FREE

The next time when you go for your holidays with Theozescapes all you need to do is buy your Breakfast and Dinner at the hotel and get the accommodation free on presentation of the voucher.

"Stay 2 Nights for the Price of 1"

Pay for one night and get the second night Free,

With Theozescapes accommodation voucher you can stay 2 nights for the price of 1 on your next holidays."

It's not fraud but it's not cheap either. The catch is buying the meal. I've had this mob call me up some time back with a similar offer. I found the average meals were about $60 for dinner and $30 for breakfast. So the cost of food was about $180 per day.

unless Im reading there website wrong you pay $399 and then you get the choice of staying there free if you get breakfast and dinner there and spend the specified meal amount, which for the life of me i cant find on the website

or

you can pay for the night and get the next night free

anyway like i said unless im reading it wrong the $399 doesnt get you accomadation but gives you the choice of buying breakfast and dinner or buy one get one free for the accomadation

I have indians calling me up with similar deals

If it is a scam you can contact SCAMwatch at www.scamwatch.gov.au. This is a govt site that covers all forms of scams from the "common" Nigerian scams to the more eoteric ones. It's also a good site to register with as they provide updates when new scams appear.

Hope the offer is genuine but, if not, SCAMwatch is the place to go.

Good luck,
Super
