Hiya all seasoned travellers,

I'm looking at getting a new phone which is Telstra Blue Ticked. Now that the A411 is now not being sold anymore, I've noticed the Samsung C5220 which "appears" to be the replacement.

Samsung C5220

Has anyone used this phone before?

It says it has large buttons and large font which is a bonus. It doesn't say whether it has an external antenna connection though.

They are currently being sold by Aus Post for $99.

Its exactly the same thing Ben , with 2 differences

1/ camera is a better

2/ Its same overall length but where the other one had an aerial , this one has length increased to same length as the top of the aerial so it is just a rectangular shape instead on aerial poking up.

Noting other responses , it is blue tick phone and can be connected to external antenna.

By external antenna do you mean via a coupled antenna patch, eg Force brand not necessarily an antenna plug?

I believe it is via a coupled patch antenna lead (no cradle needed) as the manual shows no hole with a cover for antenna as before , but I could not get an exact answer on this.

Also hard to tell from sites like this !

There is an antenna cover. Looks the same as that on the A411.

The A411, as you rightly point out, has provision for an external antennae connection, whereas this one does not. Other than that it looks the same. I suspect it would not be quite as good as the A411 due to only having an internal antennae.

This may get a few replies....I was lead to believe that the blue tick phones all had a provision for an external aerial ..and thats why they were promoted as rural phones ??

If I'm wrong, it won't be the 1st time !!!!!!!!! lol

Now for another question I hope will get some replies.....which is the BEST phone for rural reception??? ( with an external aerial )

I'm also looking around for a new phone ( although have no major complaints about my LG550 )

Hi, have had a Nokia 6120 for 2 years ( not officially blue ticked) but it seems to out perform a lot of ones that are, have travelled most of WA most of SA including Outback and QLD and northern NSW and have found very good coverage with Next G. I have not tried an external ariel ( no plug in provision ) but they say they are Ok on a Force Patch cradle.
I use it as a modem for the laptop with a data pack and can get on anywhere there is coverage. even small towns .
Have just got a new Nokia E51 and it seems to be just as good but with longer battery life etc,
Cheers Des.

On the weekend I came across 2 Coles s/markets here in Melb with the A411 for $59.

I was looking for their special on the E2510 for $29! None left, not surprisingly.

I use & so do friends a Telstra 165i. A customer service lady in a Telstra shop told me it has the best coverage of all their phones. She also said she was leaving Telstra & was telling me this although she was not suppose to push a particular phone. The phone has a small pull up aerial & we were away recently and it worked fine where other brands mentioned on this post failed. The best part was I got it for free on a $20 plan.

There are several levels of BlueTick if you look at this Telstra page

"Recommended for handheld use in metropolitan and major regional areas."

"Recommended for rural handheld coverage outside regional centres and towns."

There used to be a third one for iniside Regional Centres !
