Hi guys, We need a van to live in while working over in WA, the only problem is we have 3 little children. I would prefer it to be less than 8 years old no more than $40k and preferably nice. I have seen a couple of expanda vans and base stations by jayco. They seem to be ok, but i did read quite a few negative comments on the expandas reguarding quality. Any help would be great.

Do you need an offroader, or an on roader.

We have Jayco Stirling - bunks - I have seen 3 bunks for sale about 40k, with bath room. I am very happy with ours. I have known people who own Expandas and are very happy. I think no matter what you decide on there will always be someone who has a negative comment to make.

cheers

Will you be traveling much with the 'van?

If you want something less expensive, but still robust, try looking at some of the 1970s vans.

You have to do a thorough check to see that all is in good condition. If it is, then you'll be surprised how well some of these 'vans were made.

There were a lot of models made with multiple bunk beds with one double size as well.

Check on the Classic Caravans forum for some ideas:

I have a Jayco expanda which is new since May this year. It's done nearly 9000 ks since then and NOTHING has gone wrong or fallen off.I have a friend who has had one for about three years and NO problems with hers either. People will bag them out but I've owned two Jaycos so far and they've both done the job great. It doesn't matter what you buy, someone will always say "you should have bought one of these". Just pose the eternal question about Patrols or Cruisers and you'll get similar results.

The advantage of these vans is that the body of the van is your living space, the beds are extra when set up.Set up time with the new hardlids is about 10 mins.

The larger model expandas with the bunks at the rear and a fold out front bed would be good 5 people. The four of us lived in our 16 footer for 9 weeks just recently and didn't feel crowded at all.
I did see a basestation in Moree recently with a crowd of kids all living in the back with it kitted out to sleep four in bunks, plus mum and dad out the front in the double fold out. That looked pretty comfortable for a large group.
