Highly recommend Virlya Point on the west coast of the cape - great quiet camping spot with fabulous fishing. You need to drive a fair way up the beach so knowledge of tide times is important. We camped near where the estray joins the beach a few kms past the wreck of the lightboat. Take plenty of fresh water as if you are anything like us, you won't want to leave once you get there!

Hi Putrol,

You can spend a week at the top exploring the area, fishing, visiting Thursday Island or just relaxing. Try Punsand Bay or Loyalty Beach.

A couple of my favourite places are the Daintree Rainforest and Chillagoe, totally different but interesting.

Unfortunately I would need the whole dry season to visit all the places I like.

Regards

Take the side trip to Iron Range and Camp at Chilli Beach - Chilli Beach may be a bit busy though. Some good water holes in Lakefield to camp at as well.

Have fun Cheers

The coast drive from Cairns to Cooktown is fantastic! Take at least a day, two if you can. The Cairns sky rail over the top of the rainforest is well worth doing.
Now is the only time you own
Decide now what you will,
Place faith not in tomorrow
For the clock may then be still

Yes much better attractions & scenery over that way than around Darwin!
The Cook Highway from Cairns to Daintree is a must along with a swim at Mossman gorge. And Lyndon, you would be able to perhaps see our place at Lake Placid from the Skyrail to your right as you come down the mountain from Kuranda...

Voxson, not much chance of you getting on the Skyrail as you've got to the ripe old age of 44 without ever getting on an aeroplane!

Hi Putrol
Try and avoid those school holidays if you can, it can be standing room only, friends went up in June/ July this year and camped on the side of the road in a few of the popular spots. We went up in August/September and there were 5 vehicles at Chilli Beach, about 8 at Punsand Bay and 8 at Loyalty Beach. Good luck you will love the place. I agree a lot more to see then around Darwin and I live here.
Cheers

Putrol,

Head in to Hope Vale & then out to Elim Bay... There is a beautiful campground (no power, but generators are welcome) out there with toilets & showers, run by an Aboriginal elder by the name of Eddie (i think charges are $10 per adult, per night). You can also catch mud crabs from the beach (just remember to throw the females back, as they are protected) & there are also a few good fishing spots around there as well... If u ask Eddie, he should point u in the right direction of the fish.

Cheers, Brad

Hi all
What length of time is reasonable to do a Cairns to Cairns tour taking in sites like have been mentioned as well as a trip to at least Thursday Island?
I have plenty of time as nearly every day is a holiday! Except when home and family duties call.
Cheers
