Woodlands Trip

Hi all, we're just back from a week's WA eastern goldfields trip following the Cave Hill ExplorOz trek and Eqinox's Widgie to Eyre Hwy user trek.

Thanks to all for the resources. Plus we followed some other notes out of Nic Underwood's Eastern Goldfields tours book.

Conditions were great apart from being thunderstormed off one track.Woodlands were absolutely delightful and tracks were mostly good, but with some serious rutting in places on the W to EH option nr at the highway end.

Also the 7km spur to Moochabinna Rock on Equinox's plot was pretty scratchy and probably not worth the effort, given the rock is not partic. impressive.

For anyone not familiar with these Great Western Woodlands and who might be interested, there is a great reference available at http://www.wilderness.org.au/campaigns/great-western-woodland/files/the-great-western-woodlands-report.pdf.

Cheers.

How was the Widgie to eyre highway? I did simular trips with work a couple of times in 04 but then in o5 or 06 that area was burnt extensivly by a fire that burnt for 2 months

The burnt out area (maybe 10 or so kms?) is now undergoing vigorous regrowth but is still pretty unattractive.

The track in this area is starting to suffer from dead tree stags falling across it. The small ones are fairly easy to just drive over but then you risk punctures. The large ones all had chicken tracks around them.

Cheers.

Hi John

I, with others, wrote two books on the woodlines, one is for sale on ExplorOz

The Lakewood Woodline- 1937- 1964
The Lakewood Woodline operated south of Kalgoorlie and east of Lake Cowan, with firewood being cut as far south as 25 miles south of the Eyre Highway.
$40.00

The other from Hesperian Press or State Library bookshop. Its called Early Woodlines of the Goldfields.

If wanting to travel further in the area I am happy to provide more info as I have lots of plts and wpts.

cheers

Phil
