Should anyone wish to visit Ellenborough Falls, NW of Wingham, NSW take note Greater Taree Council has declared a weight limit of 2 tonnes at Marlee bridge, in effect stopping 90% of tourists and grey wanderers from entering the Park.

This includes the local fire brigade which is based on this side of bridge and should a house catch fire, must detour 29 klms plus back klms to extinguish the flames.

Also beware of speed humps on bridge, they have a warning of 10 kph, are made of steel of 100mm in height 75mm in width, there are 2 sets on each approach to bridge, a suspension shop owner, dream come true.

Have you considered that there might be a safety issue involved? Sounds to me like the council has received some sort of advice that the bridge is not as strong as it ought to be. That being the case, and given that most country councils are financially destitute, it's probably their only option to avoid a possible accident and the ensuing law suit. Unfortunately, a fact of life these days.

Teege
You are spot on as Taree has a massive shortfall in money for bridge and road rectification and they are even looking at ways to opt out of some responsability and let others maintain them.

I like your bit about crime and governments but in reality that doesnt work either thats why the Berlin Wall came down.

Hi All.
Read in today's Telegraph, that Local Councils are considering " SPONSORSHIP " to pick up the tab on infrastructure shortfalls. How could Big Business pick up on this. I can see some fantastic ideas in " Friday Funnies " tomorrow.

Its funny you should mention that Teege, I spoke with the shop owner at Marlee and he told me the Council works dept. were grading the road on the other side for the previous week which involved 8x12 tonne trucks, one 40 tonne excavator with semi, one large grader, one 8 tonne roller.

They packed up their gear on Friday and left and on Monday morning placed a 2 tonne limit on bridge declaring it unsafe for heavy vehicles, go figure.

The DMR, now RTA weren't stupid when they handed over to NSW Councils that they were now responsible for all local roads and bridges, except Federal highways, until they are by-passed then reverts back to Council

Note when that family was killed on the old Pacific Highway at Peats Ridge when they drove into the washed out Pacific Highway during a storm, the Coroner blamed Gosford Council for not maintaining the road.

Between Dungog Shire Council, Great Lakes Council, Gloucester Council and Greater Taree they have 40% of wooden bridges in NSW which in Taree alone needs $140 million to update their bridges, where is the monies collected by RTA for the last 11 yrs?

only a weight limit of 2 tonnes on the bridge????????

considering the average family car weighs approx 1600 kgs????

it sounds like it should be closed off altogether!!
