Having just upgraded from a 1994 Rodeo 2.8 diesel to a 2002 TF 3litre rodeo which is the last of the old shape with the intercooler on top of the motor I was disappointed with its hwy
hill climb ability. At a 100kph it tends to drop 10 to 15 kph on hills that I had memories of the old 2.8 maintaining 100kph. Both utes are space cabs with canopies. The present one has the 30x9.50x15 BFG tyres which are slightly smaller in diameter compared to the standard ones.
Anyway after new fuel and air filters I handed it over to a diesel fuel mob who put it on a dyno. Apparently not down on power. Hmm that narrows the issue down to the driver or that as good as these go. The diff ratios are taller than the old one so it does run at lower revs.
I was interested in anyone else's experience as to whether they were dissapointed in the vehicle compared to the old 2.8. or have you had this problem and solved it or if you have the 3litre TF Rodeo how
well does yours go ? Does not make sense as the 3litre is 96kw and the 2.8 was 74kw. My 3 litre has done 130k. I would have put a set of injectors into it but alas they are the two stage variety which cost $330 each compared to the 2.8 injectors at $120 each.
Cheers Peter

Peter,
sorry to hear you are dissapointed the the purchase. I have an 09 DMAX (same as rodeo) with the 3.0Lt Turbo Diesel Intercooled motor and i have to say, even with a couple of hundred kg of weight added and 2 average size people i see no drop in power up the hills. I regularly go up and down the Sydney/
Newcastle F3 freeway which as anyone who has travelled along that road will testify to the quite decent sized hillls on it and with cruise control on at 110kph (GPS speed), Miss
Turtle powers up the hills with no strain at all.
it might be worth you doing some research on haveing a DPCHIP installed. Apparently they significantly increase torque and reduce fuel consumption. Just a though, good luck.
Tony.

not exactly comparing apples with apples are we? There were no common rail varible vane turbo's in TF Rodeo's !

When I did the changeover about 4 years ago (2000 model to RA 2004 model) I was delighted with the difference.
I am going
places where I would have got bogged in the old one.

I've got an 02 Rodeo with the 3lt in it and I have driven the old 2.8lts. The 3lt has a fair bit more power. If your motor is ok, maybe it has something to do with the oversize tyres.

Yes there is more power than the 2.8. It gets going quicker and will rev willingly if pushed however it tends to drop its bundle on the hills when sitting on 100kph. It seems to go ok around town but still slow on some hills on the
Mitchell Freeway here in
Perth. The 30 X 9.5 x 15 tyres are a bit smaller in overall diameter than the standard 205 x 16 so they should be easier to turn for the car if anything. The 30x9.50x15 appear very common choice by TF Rodeo owners so I dont expect the width of the tyre to make a significant difference. Given the engine passed the dyno I was wondering whether it was a gearing problem or even the driver.
So does your Rodeo generally manage to sit on 100kph in 5th without frequently droppimg 10kph and less often 15kph ?
Thanks Peter

Hi Peter,
Ive got 225 tyres on my Rodeo which are a little wider then standard but not as wide as yours, and it will sit on 100kms all day except for the bigger hills. I may be wrong but I would have thought that the wider the tyre the more power would be required to turn them.

Steve, I dont suppose you would recall what engine revs yours is doing in 5th gear at 100kph or 110kph ?

Hi kwk56pt
You are dead right about that model rodeo.
A local mechanic spent quite a bit of time trying to get to the bottom of the issue but without help from GM gave up at the time.
It killed the sales in the area at that time (hard won from hilux).
In my business we had 1 of the first 2.8 td's then 3 96-97 td's plus one of the last 2.8 td's then added a 3liter td as you have and what a disappointment they have a little more torque down low (which was a criticism of the earlier 2.8's but it uses more fuel and is not very sparky.
It put us off and we changed brands after that one.
cheers

Out of intrest did you have the standard 205 X 75 X 16 size tyre and rims ? Have you heard any reports after they have had a chip installed ? What brand did you end up with ? Fuel usage is ok, 9l / 100 around town and 10 on the hwy. The gear changes to fourth on the hwy I think cause it to use a bit more when you would expect a bit less. I am happy withe way it goes around town but the slowing on the hills on the hwy is damn annoying.
Was this still a problem with RA that you are aware of ?
Thanks for your input .....Peter

Sorry for the delay in answering I was up the coast on our atvs with some guys fishing overnight
Some had the standard tyres as you quote and 2 had after market alloys one of which was the 3 litre, the tyre diameter was smaller than standard although wider as the wheels were changed just for looks.
The 3 litre had more torque down low which was an issue with the earlier 2.8's but the increase in torque came at the expense of cruising and overtaking which was made worse by the higher gearing.
It was resolved in later models.
We did not chip any of the Rodeo's but had two 2.8'swith Safari intercoolers fitted by the dealer when new and they went very
well giving better economy and performance and running cooler under normal power in very hot conditions.
We have a chip on a 2.5 Navara which is set more for low down torque than max power and it makes it far more tractable and also has a bit more top end.
By the way 3 of the 2.8 td's cracked pistons at between 195000 and 240000k's
which was put down to badly worn injectors so would recommend changing or having them checked at 150000 to 170000 k's, the injector pumps were still within specs and the motors when pulled down showed very little other wear.
cheers
