Hi fellow 4x4ers. I live in Perth and have just been given an 1994 Isuzu MU 4X4 Diesel wagon, however it does not have a towbar. Does anyone know where I could purchase one of if there are other vehicles that may fit. A desperately need one to go camping. cheers

Sorry Ian the Rodeo ones need to be modified to fit, I know as we had to build a tow bar for my MU today, but Poppy what do you want to tow?, in weight that is. There is one available which bolts straight on the back four bolts, but only good for around 750 KGs even though it is rated to 1200 KGs
The Rodeo ones are to wide and with our MUs the hangers on the left springs are to far back.

Here is a couple of shots, it still needs the top bolts put in and a coat of paint.

Hate to be a 'wet blanket' but it will matter little if you have an accident which ends up in the Coroner's Court. No cert. and they throw away the book regardless of how well it was built.

Hi Bruce
You polluted an MU with a Mr Bitchi bar.
Ive checked mine and the 94Auto has a Hayman Reece R1136 Holden Jackaroo LWB 89/3-93 1500KG 120KG.

The 95 Manual has a Trailboss OTHD300B Tongue No 5000 GTM 1800KG Ball 180KG.

What ever mods are done if they do not detract from the stated capacity and you do not tow in excess of the stated capacity then you are still legal and an engineering assessment would shut down an overt Insurance Company trying to deny liability.

If you tow in excess of the stated capacity you can be legally charged regardless of how strong it is as you are obligated to plate it correctly.

NSW Technical RTA advised me you can build your own and plate it and then you have a valid argument that can only be proven wrong if it is not up to an engineering standard that would be the correct standard for what it is plated for.
The legal costs to prove it may exceed an initial engineering report as to its adequasy.

Ian the MU Wizard we have has a Trailboss....2500kg/250kg ball, but it is coil sprang so that bar won't fit the MU which I was hoping for. And those two you have would be a little to small for my needs, the old Viscount is 1700 kg ATM, oh in the sh't again it is only suppose to be 990 kg ATM by the reg cert.
If I did every thing 100% legal I would not be game to take a leak or breath air, and as for most van out there if the owner was to put them over a weigh bridge I think they would find them to be over. So Kevin tell me your van is 100% legal cause if it is not your in the same sh't as me.

Sorry Ian, I just re read your last post, yes I will check out the situation here in Qld see what has to be done.
We can legal tow what the Jackaroo of the same vintage can with the MUs, I think it is 2250 kg. I got that from DGA whom I am insured with. Ge I think I need a beer after all this lol

Fellow MU owners. The my camper trailer comes no where near the weight capacities mentioned even with the bride sitting on the trailer. I so I will speak to Holden & a trailboss distributor as well if I can find one in WA. Regards Mark

Thanks for that link to the Isuzu site. I looked at that once before and (obviously didn't look hard enough) thought it was american :-)

Good one Malcolm, that trip will probably not eventuate, may even end up up your way then for the V8s. Actually I just talked the Boss into take a weeks long service leave after the June/July school holidays so we can do a northern trip for a change. So I will do that other trip in September.
