My daughter had a rumble comming from the front of her awd subaru engine.
Her first thing was, "Dad whats this noise"?. can you fix it??, My reaction was
NUP!, Then of course the father daughter thing kicks in and old softy starts to get his head down & arse up with this thing to have a good listen and come up with the diagnostic result of a failure in one of the timing belt carrier pulleys or rollers, what ever? I gave her the details of a mechanic that was all good ,and a day later she had a quote for just under a thousand dollars for a timiing belt kit to be fitted. Then along came famous son inlaw who told the mechanic he was ripping them off , and took the car to his desinagted mechanic, who in turn has fixed the timming belt issue for $ 937.00, and its running like a bucket of chit!!!, So daughter has gone back to original recomended mechanic, with tail between legs, Can you fix it??, I know...I Know, crazy stuff!!, Just feel sorry for the mechanics that are involved in this sort of nonsense from time to time.
Cheers Axle.

I remember the days when you could see the ground whilst looking down on the engine, now the gaps are filled with so much computer gear.................

Yep, If you took the bonnet off ,you could stand in the engine bay of an HK holden kingswood to work on the trusty 186.

Yep, I've found subarus are great for the first ten years and after that everything costs at least $1000 to fix!
My daughters learnt to drive and owned Subarus. The last one we had was an Lseries EA82 with twin timing belts - the idler seized on the LHS belt about 30,000k after it was fully reconditioned. I had the cyl heads reconditioned because the valves were bent ( the motor had aftermarket pistons which didn't have the cutouts in the crown of the pistons). New genuine belts and new aftermarket bearing - it ran great, but then same thing happened 20,000k later out in the country. Retrieved the vehicle (and daughter) and fixed it again. Sold the vehicle and it holed a piston the day after it was sold - so I paid the new owner to get a second hand replacement motor.
Boy, did that vehicle cause me a heap of grief (and money) - can't bring myself to buy a subaru again. At least no son-in-laws were involved and I didn't trouble any mechanics!

Hi, am with you on the idler problem , I bought a S/H "L" model in good nick , first trip north the idler bearing ( the toothed alloy) , sized ( no other damage , just stopped as ut also drives the dizzy,) so had to leave it at
Hawker and towed it home later, pulled it down and replaced the idler wheel bearing, about 5.000ks later same thing so started a bit of examinining, and found that the mounting spacer was a very tight fit when pressed into the bearing making it a bit stiff to turn,( first time I thought it was just full of grease) so we skimmed a smell off the spacer and it did another 20.000 ks before I sold it and it is still going Ok now,
Cheers Des.

We get customers all the time who think we are ripping them off because the guy down the road can do it cheaper.
People ask us how much an hour we charge and when told we charge $99.00 per hour they scoff at it and tell us we are a rip off.
We spend about $8000 a year on training, another $5000 per year to be members of different technical organisations and publications and about $12000 a year on upgrading diagnostic equipment and buying the latest and greatest
tools to make the job quicker.
So theres over $20000 before we even start.
We did an advanced training course over here in
Adelaide a couple of weeks ago starting at 7.30am and finishing at 5.30pm on a Saturday and Sunday and it cost about $2000 to put our guys through it plus pay, the funny thing was we had 16 people at the training session.....the sad thing was their was 3 from our company and 2 from another company who were from Metro
Adelaide....the rest were from country areas and 7 were from interstate.
So not all repair businesses are the same.
So lets see........... a place charging $99.00 per hour with the best training and the right and latest equipment or a back yarder who charges $40.00 per hour!
So who is
the rip off.

problem is though that just cos someone charges top dollar you cant assume its top quality.

$99 per hr ! so you obviously rate yourself above doctors and nurses who have to study constantly to upgrade their skills , how much does the actual grease monkey get out of the $99 ? Ef all , yet you claim it costs him/her 5k per year to be a member of tech organisations ? As fisho64 said , just because you claim top $ dosnt mean you provide top quality.

What im saying is just because anyone charges a given sum doesnt mean you will receive that level of service. If it was that simple the crooks could just charge big$$
