Satellite Setup Help?

Hi All,
I have just bought a new staellite dish from the Perth show.
It has a Strong receiver and I cannot get it to work with my laptop. Worked OK on the TV at home. I have an AverMedia TV Card but not real sure what needs to be plugged in. The manuals provided with all the stuff are useless as they do not mention laptop setup.
Has any one got a similar setu[ and can give me some quick advise.
It is all setup outside at the moment.

Steve

You will probably need to provide a bit more info. What are you trying to view on your computer? Do you have a card in the receiver? If so, has the card been activated? What type of card? Is the dish correctly aligned to the appropriate satellite? If it worked OK on your TV, why have you tried to connect it to your computer?

Thanks Dio,
I have a card (Optus C1) which is being activated from yesterday.
I want it my laptop cos that is what we will be using it for when we travel to watch TV and catch the news occasionally.
I have tracked the satellite but am getting no response on the laptop. There is only the antenna cable connected to the laptop via the AverMedia whereas on the TV you have the coloured cables for video and audio.
I do not know if there needs to be a TV antenna going into the Receiver as it indicates that in the manual.
Hopes that helps.

To run Tv on a laptop you will need a TV tuner card or USB dongal. Unless you have a tuner card in the laptop. I use a USB dongal to access HD Tv at home. Steve. B...

Steve,
That is what the AverMedia is. It is TV and FM radio card.

Without lookling at the Strong receiver or the Acermedia card, my guess is that the Strong is outputting straight video and audio, rather than VHF/UHF and you are feeding it into the VHF/UHF input of the Acermedia card.
Does the Acermedia card have a video input as well as a VHF/UHF input? If so, then you'll need to connect that from your Strong reciever to that input, plus an audio connection from the Strong to the audio line input on the laptop. Not all TV receiver cards for lappies take both VHF/UHF and video inputs.
Component video or S-video will give you better results than the composite video (yellow) connection.

Hi Gerry,
The AverMedia TV Card has two ports on it ...one for TV, the other for Radio.
There is nothing about UHF/VHF. I can get the radio to scan and operate so I know the Card is working. Just cannot get anything via TV.

Hi Steve,
Check the AverMedia card; there should be two inputs, one for TV (RF - VHF/UHF) and the other is for video, not audio. This second input will most likely have a matching plug with some short leads which can be plugged in. This is purely video.
You can do two things:
- use the RF output of your Strong into the RF input of the AverMedia card, then you'll have to find out what TV channel the Strong is outputting and tune the Avermedia card to it.
- Or you can take the composite video (yellow) connector from the Strong, and feed it into the composite video input of the Avermedia card (a better arrangement). You'll need to also feed audio from the Strong into the Audio Line Input (not on the Avermedia card, but on the laptop - a 3.5mm connector). You will also need to go into the software of the Avermedia card and select the video input rather than RF. I've left you an MM - contact me if necessary.
cheers,
Gerry

Hi Steve, as far as I know, you cannot receive free to air satellite on your laptop. I have had free to air satellite now for 6 yrs and have not heard that you can. HOWEVER, a more knowledgeable person may prove me wrong
Cheers

Hello George,
If you read the ExplorOz article on Sat TV, it confirms (I think!!) that you can get free-to-air but you need a card. I have an Optus one which does the same function. It was 'included' in my purchase but you can buy them separately with no ongoing costs.
Probably may be worth investigating.

you laptop has to have an av input or it just will not work . when yoy connect the decoder to the tv it goes into av inputs , thus the same has to be done on the laptop.
and you do not need to have a tv aireal connected just av .

And then tune it in to the signal on the card on whichever channel the strong outputs it on.
