I was talking to a fellow vanner an hour ago who has a Prado and was telling

him about a friend whos Prado hitch bleep tered and the van took off.

He was saying he was looking at a new tug but wouldnt buy a Nissan because

he had heard of a guy who had a Pathfinder with a WDH and when he took it

in for a service was told that use of one would void his warranty.

Sounds like one of those he was told by someone who yadayada .

Anyone confirm or deny this.

Incidentally this guy is towing a 25ft JAYCO with a Prado.

He has both chains not crossed and the breaksafe all attached in one place

with a D shackle I wouldnt use on my garden trailer.

The breaksafe wire is wrapped around the ball handle so if the van takes off it

cant possibly pull the pin.

He also reckons he doesnt need a WDH.

He said he knows all about towing as hes driven Triples, Dozers the lot.

Sincerely hope I never meet him on the road.

Cant believe just how stupid some people actually are.

I think I read recently that the Nissan towbar is not up to coping with a WDH, hence the warning. The solution was to fit a Hayman Reece bar which can handle the WDH.

Yes, there are people out there towing big vans without WDHs. They probably think seatbelts don't work either......

I told him that and he reckons it had a HR towbar but after seeing how he

hooked his van up I wouldnt believe he knows anything but thought I would

ask anyway.

Cheers

When the current shape Pathy was released Nissan pulled a real shonky with their "Nissan" towbar. They covered up the towbar manufacturer's weight plate and inserted their own with a higher load capacity. The bar in fact was only a plate bolted under the rear of the vehicle. There was no attachment to the chassis of the vehicle. When they started to break they pointed to the fact that the instructions sold with them stated that they were not suitable for use with a WDH. Their argument was that the downward pressure of the WDH was causing the bolts to pull through and this wouldn't happen in the absence of a WDH. But, they also paid for any replacement with a Hayman-Reese. I believe this charade has now been overcome by supplying a full size towbar under the name "NIssan" and the problem no longer exists. (But I personally still wouldn't trust Nissan.) There should be more info on the Pathy forum.

Yes I know about the dreaded Nissan towbar problem.

The point I was pushing maybe obscurely is that the guy supposedly was told

that having a HR WDH on his Pathfinder would VOID HIS WARRANTY.

Seems strange if as you say Nissan were replacing their shonky bar with a HR.

He also reckoned that he has seen a Pathy that had creases up above the rear axle and had poppd the rear window.

It was blamed on the owner using a WDH

All sounds like crap to me but one never knows

Gday Graham,
Nissan's towball weights and the table and explanations are here on their website.

At GVM, a weight of only 50kgs is allowed!

I'd guess there's more to it than just the towbar. Looks to me like they are getting tired of the warranty claims for bent chassis. The Navara D40 have been bending chassis and I think the Pathfinder has the same chassis.

Cheers
