I think the Hilux will do fine with a Poptop. At the end of the day when asking these types of questions ask yourself how many times will I be towing, how far etc etc because unless your towing all the time a slightly slower journey won't hurt you.

I intend towing a jayco pop top soon in my 3L non turbo dual cab hilux. On paper the specs for power and torque are woeful, on the road however it drives great, in fact on domestic runs the torque curve swings it along as good as my previous 6 cylinder 3.4L petrol prado. Noticbly lacking only on steep hills though.
So towing? Don't know yet, but if its the LN167R with the EFI motor you can chip it and it does make a difference.

Won't have any trouble handling the load but don't expect to be able to travel at 100kph into wind or maintain speed on inclines. The BIL has one and it tows his poptop Compass
well but on a run from
Emerald to the coast a couple of years back and heading into a stiff breeze....he had trouble maintaining 50kph...but hey it still got him there albeit a bit slower and chomped up a lot more fuel as
well.
