hi all
I am after some advice for a new (read 2nd hand) to replace my current 4wd a Feroza.
I have a boat that I tow and the Feroza is struggling to get it up to the river. Apparently it weighs under 750 kg's, the previous owner had it on a weight bridge.
So I am loking for advice on a mid sized 4WD up to 20 Grand. Its going to be used as a daily driver and needs to be capable of towing the boat comfortably.
I have been thinking of
Prado (would rather diesel but thats a needle in a
hay stack)
Mitsu Challenger
Holden Jackaroo
Any suggestions comments on any of the above or something different. I would like to use it for towinf the boat and doing mild 4WD, we have a once a year trip to
beachport for 1 week, so something thats good to drive in the sand.
Thanks All

The Prado diesel would be the pick but for $20000 most units will have 300000ks plus. Could pick up a good petrol in this price range though.
The Jackaroo
well we have two of them as they are the best value for money out their and very
well built. Stay away from post 98 diesels(lots of issues) but if you go for a petrol manual they are ok on fuel. My 98 se man averages mid 13s towing my 4.2 bass boat(about 600 kgs) siting on 100. My wifes auto o3 uses on average 2l/100 more them
mine.I have done 50000ks in my Jack now showing 150000ks and the only major repair was the inlet manifold gasket. You can pick up immaculate units with 100000ks for less then $14000.
The challenger are also a good thing and are the most economical v6 out their.
Really what you have to look for is condition condition condition, any of the above would be a good choice.
One other thing my 98 Jack will pull my boat up the long pull from
Sofala to wattle Flat averaging 100( provided I run it on 98). My old 22r runner use to get down to 40 on the steepest pinch. Sallys auto is about 10 to 15ks slower up here.
Good luck Pete

Ditto, the Jack, late 3.5 with the wide body would be the pick.

Thanks for all the info. My personal choice would be the Prado, bud budget constrants and the lack of a vehicle will probably rule them out.

Same as swmbo s , lot of car for the money, only downside the widetrack autos are thirsty. Sals av about 16 to 20/100 arround town but try finding a prado of that year model and ks for less then $20000.
Cheers Pete

You could also look for a Pajero in that price range - plenty of NM petrol models under 200 thou Km, and a few diesels though a 3.2 diesel will likely have more kms in that price range. No problem as a tow vehicle, plenty of petrols on gas if you want too. No problem as a vehicle in the sand too.
cheers,
Richard

Thanks I hadn't look too closely at the Pajeros. I just threw that in there as my friend has one. In comparing them in price they do look quite nice. The only thing causing me to hesitate is the IRS.

The Mits. challenger would probably be best value for money. Should pick up the last model released here, 2006 from memory, with 70000k for under $20k.
