Was driving along a country road yesterday 110k's no issues. Pulled into a servo for a drink. Started the car up...no worries and drove off. Soon as I put my foot down and the turbo spooled up.WOOOOOSHHHHHHH..big blow past sound from exhaust. thought my exhaust system had sprung a leak behind the turbo. At idle, sounds like I've got a chevy V8.
Anyway limped home and it drove alright keeping it under the 1900rpm mark. Turns out the EGR line from the exhaust manifold (the brass looking one at the rear of the engine) has cracked and letting gases out. It split between the flex ribbed portion.
Any one heard of this before???
Anyway, new one on the way...

You usually bend that pipe to remove the rocker cover to adjust the valve clearances. Sounds like it didn't like being bent to and fro.
Solution is simple - blank off each end and you'll never look back!

Happened to my Jeep CRD in Tassie last year - fortunately it was still under warranty and a known issue - fixed for nothing and got a car wash as
well - great service !!

Mandrake, i have a 2005 2.8 CRD Cherokee. Is this a common problem and if so was it easy to rectify or did a mechanic have to do it.

Mine's a 2007 2.8 CRD and when in Tas it was the third callout to their RAC for a Jeep Diesel with a cracked EGR tube in that week !!
Apparently Jeep / Chrysler use a non-flexing tube and eventually under engine stress it bends and cracks - whereas the new one is flexible ( I think ) .
It was done by Jeep in
Hobart under warranty and the operation took about 5 hours after the engine had cooled down overnight ... So not quick and easy ..
Hey it might never happen but when it does you got no power and enough noise to sound like a V8 dragster !! I was towing the POD at the time and going uphill at 5 kph was interesting to say the least !! LOL
Cheers

Thanks for that.Hopefully i never get
mine to sound like a V8.I will have a look at the connection to see if it is a rigid or flexable one though.

TD42ti Patrols had a recall on this similar hose on the last models - was a fairly large job.

Andrew
I haven't heard of it happening, but why (if you did) think the Turbo had to do with it happening? "Soon as I put my foot down and the turbo spooled up"
Cheers

I didn't think the turbo did it, I thought the noise was coming from where the exhaust joins the dump pipe off the turbo. It sounded like exhaust gases where escaping from that area and it became very noticable when the turbo spooled up under acceleration.
If you get my drift.... :-)

Thanks Andrew, yes I do...
Did it split at the bellows or on the straight pipe?

The bellows (the ribbed bits) right where the fold commences in the 1st one up.

We will get done for chit chat... but anyway, have you owned it from new?
Mine has done over 150000 km and no problems yet, valve clearance has been done twice (not by me), and sometimes not by Newtown Toyota but thats another story.

I'm the 2nd owner of
mine..since 86,000k's.
I'm pretty confident it's been done by a mechanic in the past but proving that would be impossible.
never mind, not something I think is likely to happen again and it appears from others to be very uncommon.
Maybe just block it off then not an issue all!
