G'day, have a 2004 Patrol wagon, central locking remote is chewing threw batteries, flattening the battery in about a week, does any one of the learned forumites have any clues as to why it may be doing this and a possible cure......... Nissan are hopeless when asked any questions about anything. Thanks in advance. John

Buttons making continuous contact and draining the battery -
Shonky batteries
Faulty remote circuit
Could buy a learning remote from Dick Smith and see if it works OK
Mandrake - unhappy at work

Mandrake, if the buttons were making continuous wouldn't the central locking be locking and unlocking continuously? Shonky batteries, have replaced them three times from two differnet sources. Faulty remote, maybe, but it has happened with both of them.
Probably should have said that last bit about both remotes in the first post.......
Thanks for your reply.

Thats a nice easy and cheaper alternative to getting the makers new ones -
I had 2 for my old Jeep and it takes 2 minutes with a phillips head screwdriver and tweezers to program the remote .
I think they cost about $40 each ,

Has water/saltwater/juice gotten inside the remote and provided a path for leakage current that drains the battery ?

G'Day John,
Had the same problem with one of my remotes, I think I posted it on the Patrol
Forum. Was a while ago now but there were a few ideas posted on what could be the problem. Might be worth a look.
Anyway after about five batteies I gave up on it. I Just use the key......... needless to say the missus got the only working remote.
PMK

Hi John
my husband isn't home at the moment to ask what he did, but we had exactly the same problem with our 2003 Nissan Patrol remotes. He has fixed them but all I know is he had them opened up and was using the soldering iron. Not sure if it's any help but they are working perfectly now.
Cheers
Michelle

John it is pretty unlikley that both remotes are faulty with the same problem at the same time. They don't talk to each other in any way.
Did the issue start at the same time for both? Sounds to me like the receiver in the vehicle is somehow not receiving properly.
As a guess when you put in new batteries they are strong enough to make it work ( like a surface charge) , but after a short period the batteries go down a little.
1) did the remotes 'fail' at the same time?
2)Has the distance that they work reduced or does it reduce over the week that they work?
3)Is there a light on the remotes? And if so does it go dim or off after the week?
4) A long shot - get your remote and put it on the antenna lead or base of a clock radio set to AM. Keep pressing the button and slowly turn the dial till you hear interference from the key when you are pressing it. Try when you have a new battery and then when the key stops working. Don't touch the dial after you "find" the harmonics from the key. You may or may not hear anything depending on the radio and key type. If it still works then the remote is fine. ( I think the remotes are fine anyway).
Also I actually doubt that the learning remote will learn your sequence. It is probable that the remote uses rolling codes ( If the learning remote works then Nissan ought to be spanked).
Also try ebay for new remote keys. I just bought two, a BMW one for $50 ( $620 from BMW) and $90 for a Landcruiser 200 one, ($250 from Toyota).
