Just got my GQ patrol 2.8td back from a 'pre trip inspection' to be told that it's one of the best GQ's to roll thru the door :) Nothing to be done on the car at all (even the original bushes are 100%).
this car has done
Cape York (previous owner) and with me numerous trips across the Simpson, Tassie, flinders, Googs,
Innamincka etc etc so it hasn't had an easy life (270,000km on the clock and 90% of that is off road).
What I have done though is done my 5000km service (engine oil, air filter, fuel filter and oil filter) religiously. Also done my diffs and gear box every 40,000km's. Plus all the regular TLC we do to our cars.
I'm the first to admit that the gear box and engine I have are not out of trucks but it goes to show that basic care will give many years of reliability for any vehicle.
Bring on the next 20yrs.

"plus its a Nissan"
That's exactly right. Being a Nissan the mechanic was probably impressed that it drove into the work
shop under its own power, and not on the back of a tray :)
(Yes I'm aware it's the 3L that explodes)

hehe.
My wifes Dad is a big Toyota fan and has been his whole life. Diesel mechanic by trade but never
services his old cruisers. They keep running but only just. A few years ago he wondered why one of his doors fell off. I looked underneath and saw he was still running ont he original shockies (probably about 30yrs old)!!
All the real 4wd's are built tough from the factory but some things will always need replacing (upgraded coils for carrying weight, shockies AT tyres etc) on any make/model. Regular servicing should keep our cars going for years (unless there is a design fault like the early GU's then there is nothing you can do about it).

I agree about regular maintenance. . . . but also, you need a bit of luck, There would be a few owners of the 3.0 litre variety that has religiously performed maintenance on their beloved vehicles, only to have it develop a $15000 failure.

Well, my 15yo 4.2 has 392K on the clock. Bought it 2nd hand with 265K in 2004
It has never been serviced in my time but has an oil and filters change every 10,000km more or less. Looks like the front
suspension rubbers are coming up for replacement soon. It runs very sweetly

Don't knock your gearbox Gossy. They used the skyline gearbox in the GQs for a while. It might have one of them.
The Skyline would have had more power & torque than any 4x4 released in Australia.

good point. Hadn't thought of it that way.
it has surprised me I must admit on the abuse it has taken so far. Carrying heavy weights twice across the Simpson (support veh for motorbike riders) and still going fine.
