Hi All,

I am looking at buying a 1980 something model SWB Toyota Landcruiser. I was wondering what problems people have experienced and what i should look for when buying one. Should i go for a petrol or diesel model.

Thanks heaps,

John

Just buy one! Haha, i'm bias, but seriously they are great trucks. I own a 1979 BJ40 and it's tops. It does not have power anything or plastic air. It's slow, rattly and bumpy, but that's the charm. In a 40 series it's all about the drive, not the destination.

You'll find rust in any example you look at, unless your buying a restored example. Buy a petrol if you like tinkering under the hood and don't mind bad fuel economy. Get a diesel if you like noise, being overtaken and great fuel economy!

I love my little 3.0L 'B' Diesel. It's so simple and easy to work on. The 3.0L 'B', and 3.4L '3B' diesels are basically 4 cylinder light truck engines and will run forever if maintained well. The 3B is also a good candidate for turbocharging, due to piston oil-squirters.

Check out this american forum to get you up to speed with all things Landcruiser...IH8MUD.com

Just shop around to try to find the best example in your budget.
Buy one, it's an addiction!

Cheers,
Dan

Rust would number 1 killer,

The later the year model the better it will be, best to look for one with power steering and disc brakes, 3.4l 3B deisel (if it's been looked after) are good for 500000k's plus and are waaaaaay btter on fuel.

The 40 series were a great 4x4 in their day,but by todays standards they are slow, noisy and uncomfortable.
Unless you want to become an enthusiast and do a lot of work ,or have a large budget to buy one already fixed or well cared for ,I would be looking for something a little newer.

The 7* series ,which is the next model has aircon, power steering and disc brakes as standard and is much easier to live with if you have to drive it everyday.

If you buy a 40,get the diesel and add a mild turbo. The petrol models get 15-18 mpg.
Beware the ones with engine swaps, most of them are half baked
No real bad points except rust and old age

Get a BJ42 if you can find one.
Disc brakes in the front, some have power steer and air cond...and even a digital clock...lol

There was a shorty and a mid in the 75 series.
One was all hilux engine and running gear with a cruiser body.
One was all landcruiser.
That's all I know - both had their good/bad points.

The Bunderas where coil sprung so rode and steered much better then the old fj40s. Most had the 22r motor which was a great motor, some had the 2.4 td which I think had head problems.
Only reason I never brought a bundy was lack of space behind the rear seat.
Cheers Pete
