Hi Iliza
Yes it sure does work. I mix 2 tablespoons of genric brand (don't buy the brand name, get Coles or wollies home brand as there are more active constituants) in 500mls of water. I usually premix in a 5 ltr container which is 50 tablespoons per 5 ltrs. I then put 500mls into the bottom tank along with 1 ltr of water and 300mls into the top tank which is filled.
The toilet will stay odor free for about 3 days and is totally biodegradeable so it won't hurt septic systems.
I have used this for a long time with no problems. Hope that helps.
Cheers Jack

hi jack
jack did you know that a tablespoon holds 20mls so 50x 20 = 1000mls or a 1ltr
so next time you go to a homewares shop buy yourself a 1ltr measure instead of wasting good drinking or fishing time counting 50 tablespoon fulls of napisan out
you can do it in one go

and have time for other things like pashing the wife or something more exciting
retiries ?????????

We are using the Napisan (generic brands) and find it to be wonderful stuff. Up ubtil recently we were travelling permanently in a caravan, and met many others who were similarly impressed with it.

In hot weather you do need to empty the tank more often, but you have to do that with any chemicals... Or alternatively add another spoonful of Napisan to the tank each day or so.

For those wanting to change from chemicals, note the need to soak the tank.

In hot weather add another cap full to the tank and give a shake.
No need to soak the tank or do anything.
In top tank good squirt of dish washing detergent works best. Give quick flush prior to use and lubricates and keeps bowl and seals clean. When flush water goes into cassette detergent helps break down fat in feaces and keeps the cassette clean.

Yes, knowing it is so cheap, we can empty after only one day's use if we find a dump point, without worrying about cost.

Bio Magic advise to rinse well and soak after using chemicals, and I have known people to be disappointed that the non chemical alternatives did not work for them, simply because they did not do this preparation, or did, but neglected the top tank which had been used with chemicals (our top tank hadn't).

Jack, if you put 2 tabs (40ml) Napisan to 500mls of water as you have said - then it follows for 1 litre of water it is 4 tabs (80ml) - therefore for 5 litres of water you should only be putting in 20 tabs of Napisan and not the 50 that you have mentioned. This will only be 400mls of the Napisan to 5 litres - is that right? Or have I got something wrong in the calcs... cheers.

Why bother with liquid chemical at all.... when you can use the fast acting "Odour-B-Gone" tabs. Just put half a tab and some water in the bottom tank, and Bob's your uncle... Don't have to carry liquid chems, mix it or mess with extra bottles.

Hi Fred

Napisan etc are not liquid they are dry powder. Same active component as Odour b gone [ sodium percarbonate] & much cheaper to use.
Try someyou may be converted

Why use Odour-B-Gone tablets at $45 for 10 to 30% active ingredient sodium percarbonate when you can use a capful of Home brand nappy treatment for under $3. Woolworths and Coles home brand nappy treatment is 346g/kg or 34.6% active ingredient.

We tried it for about the last three months of our recent trip to WA and have decided to go back to using the thetford green and pink chemicals.

It (Napisan - we tried all the equivalent generic brands - and used first one, then two and finally three lids disolved in a couple of litres of hot water) worked with varying success for up to three days depending on our diet and the temperature. It seemed to be less effective in warmer temperatures and sometimes just really ponged!!! We were emptying it despite it only sometimes being about half full.

I would much prefer to use no chemicals however just was not happy with any of the brands we tried. So we will ensure we always find a dump point to empty it down in future.

We found from past experience that the thetford chemicals can last for up to a week when we are free camping.

I suggest you try the nappy wash stuff for yourself and see what you think of it. If you empty the loo every couple of days it may work ok for you.

Cheers heather

If you had "topped up" the quantity of percarbonate after a few days by adding an extra dose, you would not have had any problems.

There are reports of large holding tanks going for weeks before emptying with no odour problems.

Hi Heather

After using chemicals you need to soak the tank in a double strength solution of the environmentally friendly alternative for around 24 hours. Likewise the top tank if chemical has been used in it. Otherwise the chemical will conflict and nothing will work well.

We have never used chemicals, but started with Bio Magic. (The previous owner had used the Thetford formaldehyde stuff so we soaked the tank with Bio.) I changed to the Coles and Woolworths powders before the Bio bottle was finished - MUCH better results. We were using the toilet only spasmodically, and no problem after leaving it for days. As aforesaid - you can always add a bit more of the Napi+ stuff if needed.

Chemical products are based on formaldehyde which is a nasty in the environment. It all slows down the breakdown of the waste products, whereas the oxygenators speed it up. You can dump with confidence.

Give it another go.

Mid winter you can get 5 days, warmer weather 4 days, summer 3 days, extreme weather 2 days.
What I like about Home Brand Nappy treatment you can empty the toilet when it is convenient and not when it is full. I have added a capful in the morning knowing I am going to empty the cassette in the afternoon. WIth the Home Brand Nappy treatment being so cheap and effective and importantly safe an extra cap full cost wise is not a problem.
What I have found a plus is when I know I am going to empty the cassette I add more water to the cassette prior to leaving to allow it to shake the contents more.

Thanks to the three of you for your comments re the use of Nappy soakers. I really didnt think about having to keep adding more and more of the product but maybe that would have made a difference.

When we changed from the chemicals to napisan we did exactly as you suggest re cleaning out the tanks Motherhen and still had the problems that I outlined above. Not sure why this happened but I feel we have given it a more than a fair trial and havent found it to do the job satisfactorily. Others of you might have a different result.

We used bio magic originally when we bought our new van however it didnt work because apparently it is only effective if used for both solid and liquid matter, and we only use it for liquids.

Anyway as I said above - I suggest for you to try it for yourself and decide whiether it works for you. I have already bought thetford chemicals and we have put them in our toilet in readiness for our next trip so will at least use them up before I decide whether to give the nappy soakers another try.

Heather

Hi Heather

Yes above is correct ,not much organic matter in the liquid so has little effect.
