A good site for information about bushfire alerts.

I am guessing that everyone here already has fire plan ready to go if required have cleaned and prepared their homes for the fire season and know if they should stay and defend or go early in the case of a catastrophic fire risk.

We are leaving Saturday for a drive down the high areas to Hoithan Heights and home.

I have popped back several time to see if you have had a response.

Lets hope all will be fine. Murphy - he's a bludger isn't he.

Thanks for posting that. It is comprehensive information. It is good to be able to access this kind of information through the ExplorOz network of users

Have had a brief look at South Australia. We have a fire plan but we are not in a regular fire prone area though grass fires do occur from time to time.

Still not convinced of the Fire Rating system and its application to vast areas of uninhabited lands

The problem with any system is the people who need the information usually ignore it untill it is way too late :-(

We have moved from the Sunshine Coast to Victoria, the Buderim area always used to scare the hell out of me on high fire risk days. it was and still is a bomb waiting to go off with so many homes stuck at the ends of narrow roads and limited access .

When it does burn if it goes up on a bad day we are going to see mass devastation and loss of life. Yet people seem to live there blissfully unaware of any real danger.

I am guessing there are a lot of semi urban areas that are similar round Australia.

A few 40o+ days with strong dry winds and anything will burn.

Thanks for the link

However, the ABC's information is only as good as the information relayed from the Fire Services.

On Black Saturday, it was spot on with the fires in Upper Gully, Bunyip, Harkaway and Narre Warren fires.

Totally inaccurate for the Kinglake or Marysville fires (strangely enough, eyewitness calls to 3AW gave more information on these, but it was difficult to separate the facts from the hyperbole)

Yep in situations like that it is better to cut and run before things get bad.

I cannot understand really why people said they were not properly warned of the risks.

Watching the news reports in Queensland the day before they were saying the fire danger was way off the scale and they were going into a catastrophic fire danger time.

We had been looking at buying a home in that area but just from the photos on realestate.com we had decided against it because of the high fire risk in the area.

Many of the homes we had looked at were burned in the black saturday fires.

"Watching the news reports in Queensland the day before they were saying the fire danger was way off the scale and they were going into a catastrophic fire danger time. "

- yes, that was my recollection. When the State Premier gets on TV to give a warning of extreme danger, people should realise it's not just going to be another hot windy day.
