Hi,

I'm going to change the 15 inch rims on my camper to suit the patrol. I notice on the plate it specifies the original 15 inch rims. Will I need to get it replated, will something as simple as this be deemed a mod to a camper in Qld?

How would I go about it if it's needed?

Thanks

Any roadworthy place should be able to mod plate it for around $60

Hi Austravel,
While just changing the tyres from 15 inch to 16 inch sounds simple and easy just make sure that the larger wheel sets will not foul on any part of the camper at any time.
Maximum spring extension on one side and maximum compression on the other will tell the story.

Disco..

Will it effect the drop on the canvas to the ground?

Thanks Old Girl, it's a hard floor so should be ok.

Qld Transport tell me to fill in a form and turn up for inspection. No need to redo the plate and told it costs nothing.

Did the reverse on our CampoMatic hardfloor ,went from 16" to 15" wheels but kept the same overall tire size eg 31" to suit our landcruiser , one aspect to watch when going to a larger wheel/tire size as you plan is the extra strain on the hinge where the floor/lid joins the camper body when opened up as that end will now be always of the ground rather than be supported .

Hi,

Thanks for the tip. Ours doesn't have legs at the hinge point so the hinge always takes the full weight regardless. It's a pioneer if you're interested. I'm hoping I haven't missed anything else in going down this path.

Did you bother getting the camper re-plated after the rim change?

Was informed by dept of transport [qld] that replating was not necessary at the time we did ours , rules may have changed since then, we did also inform our insurance co. of the change so no dramas , The pioneer would still have a rack on the lid /floor at the hinge end does it not ? you may find that that rack section takes the weight now but will not be in contact with the ground when upsizing the wheel/tyre package, just a thought.

Thanks hopefully the same deal now with the plate. I'll give the insurance company a ring though. This camper doesn't have a rack like yours does so won't be a drama. It's a cheaper, lighter version of the campomatic, which was my first preference. Almost got one second hand for the right price but missed out so opted for the pioneer.

Just did this on my camper. Qld Transport said to contact the manufacturer and get their OK (in writing preferably) and it would be OK.
