Evenin' all, I'm confused, when IS the best time to do the Cape?? I'm hearing May/June,then it's July/August/Sept.!!! I'd like to tow our van as far as possible to use as a base ,time isn't a concern and we've got the van set up fairly
well for dirt roads. Do they grade the roads after the wet?or only on a need to basis? All advice will be gratefully accepted to try and clear up the uncertainty. Regards Keith C

Keith,
May June can possibly be deep creeks, but not always.
July, Aug, Sept the creeks drop a bit BUT the tourists multiply and sometimes getting good camps is at a premium.
I went in May 2007 and had a great time with no
camp problems or creeks too high, but another year another result.
It will always have to be "your call"
Shoulder = Less crowds, iffy weather POSSIBLY
Peak = More crowds, better weather POSSIBLY
Any time = great driving
There are plenty of
places to set up the van and do day trips through the tough sections and return to
camp via the bypass roads.
You really need to know what the weather is going to be to pick it right.
Best I can give you Keith.
Enjoy, Colin

Hey Keith, here's another vote for May in which we had lots of
water to splash thru and it was far more pleasant than the GRR in Sept when it was too hot. Graders galore in May 08. We left
Cooktown on the 6th and went via Battlecamp Rd. Lakefield NP shortcut was still closed on the way up but open going back. Check out every spot in
Places to get a better gist and also read trek notes. Try Telegraph track in
places and it will lead you to many of the
creek crosssings.
Did see a Gall Bros DVD and Palm
creek was a dustbowl later in the season....W

Keith,
Can't add much more than what Colin said.
Did the Cape in July 06 and 09.
06 was after Cyclone Monica and there was a fair bit of
water about. In 09 the rivers were much lower.

Spent all of June up there this year and it was perfect. They had just graded the road so it was like a highway. Creeks weren't to bad either. The road was very corrugated after the school holidays so would suggest before school hols. Beginning of June most
camp sites fairly empty, end of June most sites fairly full. As said though it can change so quickly and you need to play it by ear a bit. I think the later you leave it the worse the roads will get.

September last year was very nice. Very little
water to worry about.

Deliberately September for us as
well.
The roads are bumpy then , more people but ok if stay 1 week from school holidays, but main reason was lack of oppressive humidity , less biting bugs and less
water making swimming and river crossings better and of 23 days we used our small tent without a fly on 21 of them .
P.S. No one north of
cairns knows how to make good cappicino's and I still don't know how to spell it.
