Last Night I went to a book launch for the book titled

Born in the Desert. The land and travels of the last Australian Nomad by Marion Hercock and Dadina Georgina Brown.

Dadina is the niece of the Warri of Warri and Yatungka fame.

At the launch I met Stan Gratte, Harry Leaver and Dr Peasley, who brought Warri and Yatungka out of the desert some 30 years ago. I also caught up with a modern day explorer and fellow Formite, none other the Equinox - Alan McCall.

The book is most interesting reading, with the story of Georgina growing up in the desert, and moving to town (Wiluna) There is a section of her going back to country - she shows her tracking skills and there are photos of her preparing bush tucker and digging up goannas and the like. I recommend it to anyone interested in the CSR and the Western Deserts.

Where can you get the book or want more details go to

Born in the desert.

cheers to all

Phil

That Equinox bloke....he'd turn up for the opening of a cupboard door LOL! Sounds like a good night and a good book Phil. Having traversed the country Dr PEASLEY travelled to locate Warri, it was no mean feat believe me. He must be in his 90's by now.

Turn up for the opening of a cupboard door - I like that not sure E would - lol.

Dr. Paesley is keeping well and is a sharp as a tack. If he is in his nineties he doesn't show it. The C76 tree is in a pretty little spot isn't it - apparently the pass near were its located is named Peasley's Pass. I haven't been able to find anything official about that, but have heard it mentioned many times in the recent past.

cheers

Cupboard door hey? Gee Mick it's all about the finger food, a man has to have his fill somewhere :))

Seriously, it was a great night. It was good to catch up with Phil, and as he has said, there were some interesting people there, I even managed to have a quick word to Dadina herself.

I haven't read the book as yet, it's going under the christmas tree - but I'm sure there are some interesting stories there. Thanks for posting Phil.

Cheers
Alan

Alan, it was great to catch up with you and your dad.

Re Mick - cheeky bugger isn't he! Like you I also had a chat with Dadina - she was so pleased and wasn't she excited about her story being told.

One of our crew tried to talk Dadina's son/nephew Corey into playing for the Dockers when he gets older - I tried hard to promote the other or the best team in town but the lad wasn't really sure about footy.

keep an eye on that Xmas tree - lol
cheers

Phil

Thanks for posting that, Phil. I shall endeavour to get hold of it

Like yourself, having traversed that country, any further insight is a worthwhile read. I have W J Peasley's book 'The Last of the Nomads'.

W J Peasley was born in 1927 in country NSW.

Hi Willem

Peasley born in 1927 makes him 82 yo.

If I make 82 and was half as agile and sharp as he is I would be thrilled. You would have thought late 60s early 70s.

In my opinion ithe book sits along side that other desert 'bible' The CSR A Travellers guide by the Gards. You learn so much and get a insight into Georgina's mind its a must read for anyone going out into the Western Deserts.

Hi Phil

I have ordered the book this morning.

I bought the Gards'book prior to our CSR journey in 94 and then after our trek passed it on to a friend thinking that I may never go that way again? Sigh :-( Such is life...lol

FWIW There was a video of "Last of the Nomads" as well.

As with most of these things get the book then watch the video.

We were able to borrow it from a library.

Thanks for the heads up Phil.

Hi Slammin,

The video is a great watching but this book isn't about Warri and Yatungka its about their niece Dadina and her family. Similar only in that they were in the same part of the desert but an entirely different story.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for both posts, sorry I was a bit slow getting back to you on the first one.

I also tried to speak to the young man and he couldn't understand even the most basic English, it was sad really.

I went thru the book a second time and enjoyed it even more. I recommend it to anyone.

Again thanks for you vigilance in picking up both articles, you don't miss a thing do you?
