I see an article in the local WA Auto Trader that the Australian defence force is to take delivery of the first lot of a 1200 vehicle replacement fleet of Mercedes G-Wagons. 4x4 and 6x6. May be some cheap Landies coming up???

Cheers ob

PS yes you can start the jokes about how many you would need to buy to keep one going........lol

ob,

Did you know that 98% of all Land Rovers are still on the road.

The other 2% have made it home.

AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE TAKES DELIVERY OF FIRST MERCEDES-BENZ G-WAGONS

GRAZ, AUSTRIA/MELBOURNE – October 30, 2009: German auto-maker Mercedes-Benz has delivered the first of 1200 specially made G-Wagon off-road vehicles to the Australian Army.

Almost one year to the day the Australian Defence Force (ADF) signed contracts for the supply of the vehicles, the first two prototype units were handed over at a ceremony held in Mercedes-Benz’s Austrian assembly plant, the facility where the vehicles are produced.

In attendance were Brigadier David O’Brien of the Australian Army, the Australian Ambassador to Austria His Excellency Ambassador Michael Potts, senior Mercedes-Benz executives and the General Manager of major Australian sub-contractor G.H. Varley.

The new purpose-built cross-country vehicles will replace the ADF’s existing tactical vehicle fleet, and their entry into Australia’s military is the result of a large-scale project by the ADF. Internally coded as ‘Land 121’ but more commonly referred to as ‘Project Overlander’, the transition updates all existing Australian military field vehicles and trailers with up-to-date modern versions. It is one of the ADF’s largest peace-time projects.

The contract will see the delivery of 1200 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon off-road models, supplied in a number of variants. These include two- and four-door station wagons in 4×4 configuration, 4×4 cab-chassis utility vehicles, and purpose-built 6×6 models in both single- and dual-cab chassis. It also includes a specialised 6×6 surveillance and reconnaissance version for use in northern Australia.

The ADF will test a range of prototype G-Wagon vehicles in 2010, with deliveries of production models to take place between 2011 and 2013.

Mercedes-Benz has employed New South Wales-based engineering firm G.H. Varley to provide a range of transport modules that will be fitted to many of the G-Class vehicles. These will serve a range of functions, including ambulance, command post, personnel carriage and general cargo.

Yesterday’s vehicle handover marks an important milestone in Project Overlander, a vital undertaking which commenced several years ago. An exhaustive tender process culminated in the signing of the historic contract in October last year.

Mercedes-Benz has a long history of supporting the Australian Defence Forces with field vehicles. For example, LA911B fire tankers were put into service with the ADF in 1978 and the unmistakeable Unimog off-roader commenced service in 1981. More recently, Mercedes-Benz coaches, vans and heavy-duty Actros 8×8 trucks have joined the ADF’s ranks. The well-proven G-Wagon is the latest addition to this list, bringing with it a strong 30-year service record.

About the Mercedes-Benz G-Class
The famous Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon off-road vehicle was first unveiled in 1979 and was designed predominantly with heavy-duty off-road terrain in mind. Originally known as the G-Wagon, short for ‘geländewagen’, or ‘cross-country vehicle’, this iconic all-terrain wagon has, over the many years of its production life, been adapted to ever-changing customer requirements in the civilian and military worlds.

It boasted outstanding off-road capabilities right from the outset, but its all-terrain prowess has been continuously improved through the addition of cutting-edge electronic controls and powertrain technologies, proven in the toughest off-road applications.

Its exceptional performance off the beaten track, its excellent towing abilities and balanced handling characteristics have resulted in the G-Wagon enjoying an extraordinarily long production career, which now stands at 30 years.

What a selfserving press release from MB.

Mind you it is not the only manufacturer that has, over the years, continually improved or adapted to the everchanging Customer requirements.

I can think of several others who have done the same thing.
Toyota, Nissan (till the infamous 3 litre came along), Ford, GM, Jeep and of course LANDROVER.

The change to new hi-tec vehicles will challenge those servicing them in adverse conditions. It will be much harder than just sending a flatbed tilttray to pick them up. People will be shooting at them.

Hope they work out.

The good side of this arrangement will be that there will be some well looked after Landrovers, shame about the paint job though, on the market..

Disco.

In 2006 a Landrover Discovery came across the simpson with us and the centre pulled out of one wheel and three other wheels were hanging by a thread and could not continue to cape york with us.

In 2008 a Landrover Defender left Cairns with us on route to cape york.
½ way up the daintree it went into limp mode and had to go back to cairns for repairs, then caught up with us again in cooktown as we has waited for him.
Then, an axle seal let go and he couldnt continue to the tip with us.

In 2009 ( this year ), a Landrover Discovery came with us to Arnhemland and had to be towed 500kms to safety after breaking down near Ramingining.

These are the only three times we have had Landrovers in our group.

This is just my story.
I am sure there are plenty of good stories,,,,, i dont have one though.

I have always had a soft spot for a Defender.

Why do conceited people so often have trouble concealing it?

Dress it up as 'just passing on valuable information' or 'this is just my story' but the underlying message above is clear : I drive a Toyota and I think I'm bloody marvellous. Anyone who drives anything is an inferior being.

'Great company' ? Not for me thanks

Bonz

I just re read it and conceit is not what comes to mind. What comes to mind is a Land Rover driver standing up to some wa-ker taking a gratuitous (what relevance did his post have to the thread?) shot at Land Rovers.

Please note I am not having a shot at all Toyota drivers- its clear Voxson is though from his photo.

Sometimes people say things not really related to the post like i did...

I know it looked like a vicious attack on all Landrovers,,, but let me assure you it wasnt.

It was honestly a passing comment,, or a thought had at the time...
Every time someone mentions Landrovers,,, i cant help thinking of that coincidence i mentioned in my previous post..

If it was Nissan or Toyota i would have also said it,,, but it wasnt..

I am starting to get a track record on my trips away.......

Heaven help anyone who has one of those signs on their back window "Landrover Recover Vehicle" and you spot them Bob....

If i see anyone i will warn them about you LOL.....

I am sure you regret your outburst,,, and if you dont,,, well then i am sorry i upset you...

Cheers....

Hi Voxson.....I can't speak for others...but I always get a great chuckle out of Landy jibes.......I think it is part and parcel of the whole deal, bit like the wave as two 'Fenders pass.......

Not sure why we wave... maybe it is the old I'm glad to see you on the road...but then that is the start of another Landy joke..so I'll move on.

Cheers

If i had of said what i said around a campfire as banter with a drink in my hand,,, it prob would have been a different story...

When we type things they can easily be taken out of context because there isnt much emotion in throwing a few words down...

Oh well,,, its done now..

HI Ross

They may well have been doing it with Lada's...and good for them!

Most vehicles are fully capable of breaking down; the better question is what vehicles are suitable for arduous, long-range trips...

I've owned three Defenders and have undertaken many 'arduous' trips with confidence. But as I have said before in other vehicle discussions, that is less to do with the vehicle, but more to do with the preparation of the vehicle, and appropriate driving.

The example I showed is indicative of what people have done with their Landies..with a high level of confidence..

Mind you...don't take my word for it....

This whole thread started on the back of the sale of Army Landrovers. Now, I may be just a little biased towards my 'beloved' Landies, but hey ask the Army, and in particular the SAS guys, they've been relying on them for years, in arduous conditions, and possibly at times when the world around them has all turned to 'poo' .....not a bad endorsement for the Landy.

But enjoy what you drive...I do!!

:)

Cheers
