We use two on an eighteen foot van which by standards is not a big van. One would be plenty, but we just happened to have a spare, so I fitted it.
The idea is to prevent water from "damming" so as you do not cause your annex to collapse under the weight of water, should it "pool".
All you realy need to do, if you annex has the capability, is to give it plenty of fall so the water runs off. Or set one end lower than the other, so as it assists with the fall. Hope that Helps.

Hi,,
On our small van, (10 ft rollout awning) , we use one curved rafter in the middle, de-flappers either end. If using the annexe, the annexe also suppports the awning at each end when attached. As Barry says, stopping the water from pooling on the top is most important. We learnt very quickly !!!

Aussie Traveller recommend :

Awning length 11' - 12' 1 rafter
13' - 16' 2 rafters
17' - 20' 3 rafters

Cheers,
Neil

Gooday,
Had 2 Curved Rafters on last awning which was an Electrolux 17Ft and found after a while that the Vinyl stretched and did not go back ,so even on short stays had to use them to stop pooling. Have Aussie Traveller awning on current caravan and just put plenty of slope to one end and very happy with that. Do have Anti Flap end rails & they are good when needed.
