I came home to
Melbourne last night from a business trip to find that my beloved 1988 Troopy had been stolen. I know people on this
forum know trucks and pay attention to what they see on the road. I'd be very grateful if anyone who spots my old girl could let me know. The vehicle is pretty distinctive. The rego is DKF877, though I suppose that won't last long. There is an ExploreOz sticker on the back, along with a 20 year anniversary for the Toyota Landcruiser Club sticker.
From the outside, the roof rack will really stand out. There's a plastic storage box in the middle, as
well as a steel box at the back that still bears the army stencil for smoke grenades. Front is fully barred up with an older city of SuperOscars, HF and UHF antenna. The dash would be immediately recognisable by some custom toggle switches for air compressor, amp meter, etc. There is a link to some photos of the vehicle that I've put in public access page on Facebook. Some of the photos are a bit earlier and I've swapped the split rims for Cooper ST 265s and put an ARB awning on the passenger side.
I know an '88 Troopy is not the most valuable vehicle in the world, but I spent 5 months last year up the centre, across the Kimberly and down the length of WA in Pearl. She may not be worth a lot of money, but she's worth a lot to me. If you spot her, please, please let me know. Dirk Baltzly, baltzly@optusnet.com.au or 0401 584 338.

Hi Dirk,
I hope she is spotted and returned to you soon. She certainly is a distinctive truck and will be easy to recognise. Was all of the
camping gear in the photos in the back when it was stolen, ie fridge, gerry cans, furphy etc?
Good Luck
Ben

No good Dirk. :-(
Maybe also ask TLCV if they will circulate an email among the
membership with the details.
Go to the web site and use the contact details to email the President, Tony Bryant and ask?
700
Melbourne and
Geelong TLC members keeping an eye out around town will be helpful.
Hope you get her back.

"She may not be worth a lot of money, but she's worth a lot to me"
Owning a Troopy of similar vintage, and with a similar list of mods, I know exactly what you mean. I'd be enormously frustrated. I happened to be
clearing up some papers yesterday and saw that my Troopy is insured for market value - I'd hate to think - I do know there would be a big difference between market value and the value to me (and the value of 're-creating' what I have).
If Pearl turns up in the
Latrobe Valley I'm likely to notice, and will certainly let you know. Hope she turns up.

Dirk,
I own a Cruiser of similar vintage, worth a lot to me having spent many many hours setting it up the way I want it. Just in case same thing happened to me had installed an immobiliser and alarm. However someone who wants to pinch it with effort still can.
Hope you get yours back.
Peter

Thats no good Dirk,
Its the effort that you put into the old girl that cant be re- bought.
If she comes up the Newell (Doin 100km/h) I'll make a citizens arrest and sit on him till the cops get there .
Cheers Wilko

Unfortunately the old girl was probably taken for parts and has been broken up by now, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but them's the facts. Insurance won't cover loss, especially of all the extras, I just hope you had full comprehensive, I do sympathise with you.
Rob.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Have you reported the theft to Police? If not, I suggest that you do as in the event someone does spot it or the offender(s) do try to sell or re-register it, being a (reported) stolen vehicle should prevent them from doing so. You should also include the Police Report number so that if spotted by anyone thay can immediately report same to Police along with report number and I can assure you that there will be a much quicker response to investigate such info. Good luck with your enquiries.

I do hope that you get her back. As yet another owner of a Troopy of similar vintage we understand how you must feel.
Val.

Thanks for all your kind words and advice. The police have not turned up the old girl abandoned anywhere in a car
park. That is probably a bad
sign. I fear that even now she's in some bastard's garage being parted out.
How you wish you could turn back time and get that immobiliser you priced up last year or whenever installed. At the very least, we did get a valuation and she's insured for
well above market value. Not enough to build another just like her -- there could never be such a thing -- nor even one approximating her.
I like the bloke who says he'll sit on anybody he finds driving my old troopy until the cops turn up. It's too much to hope probably that anyone will ever be caught. But if they are, I hope the bastard resists arrest. A lot of resisting that will require a lot of subduing. In fact, I hope Dirty Harry is the arresting officer.
