I have noticed a few threads lately where people are looking at the cooling options for their campers.
We are currently researching the same topic. We have decided not to go with a 1hp reverse cycle unit as there is no where to put the motor. We tried a small evaporative cooler, however the temperature difference was only 2 degrees. We could go for a small portable air conditioning unit however they weigh around 32kg and would need to have the fumes directed somewhere.
My next idea is to replace the roof vent with one of the roof vents from a shower model that contains the extraction fan.
I was wondering if anyone has done this and what the results were.
General I try to leave all the mod cons at home, but after the recent dust storm where I had to stay inside the entire day with all the windows closed due to being an asthmatic, I am looking for some way of making a similar situation a bit more comfortable.

We have a 12 volt 3 speed fan called " Endless Breeze " which was bought on internet from USA. Works well in our Eagle on humid, windless days/nights.
No suppliers in Australia when we were looking a few years ago.

This is where we bought ours.

Thanks for that information. We have had a look at the website and will add it to our list of things to research.
Just a quick question - do you use the unit as a stand alone unit or have you fitted it in the space of the existing roof vent.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Michelle,

We use ours as a stand alone item and position it to suit. It usually sits on the fridge bench top in our Eagle and provides a welcome breeze when taking the obligatory lie down. This fan moves quite a lot of air.

Hi

yourLINK says "Endless Breeze is a high volume 12 volt fan with a twelve inch blade that operates at three speeds. Air movement of up to 900 CFM (cubic feet per minute)"

I wonder how that compares to some of these "normal" box type fans of similar size that are easily purchased here in Oz? Anyone have any idea of a comparison? I have 3 of these normal ones packed away so will try dig them out to see if any specs are available but doubt there will be.

Hey Michael, is yours very noisy when on high? You got to think that moving a lot of air at high volume would create a lot of noise.

Michelle, I think the ceiling fan idea would be good as it should draw hot air up and out, especially if its being pushed along by a high volume fan. Not sure if the volume of air being drawn out through one vent would create a noticable difference though? Maybe one for the EO experts on here.

I use a flyover (large silver tarp) when camped more than a few days and keep a gap of say 12 inches between it and the jayco swan roof. This breezeway does help keep it noticabley cooler inside by a 3 to 5 degrees (best guess, but will measure at xmas). It is very comfortable in the high heat with tarp over compared to my brothers hothouse camper without the tarp and other brothers who lays his tarp directly on the camper roof rather than support it

I am also thinking of using some of the thermashield type paint on the roof too. So with shade over the canvas and roof from the flyover and thermashield paint, using a fan (or 3) to move air I hope to be comfortable. Will depend on time, money etc if I get to paint it this year

Would be interested to hear how you go with the cooling set up you settle on.

Cheers Mick....

Mick the Endless Breeze does make some noise at full speed as you would expect but at positions 1 & 2 it's not.

I chose this fan because it is 12 volt only as we are totally self sufficient on solar now with 2 x 120w panels on Jayco roof and 2 x 100ah AGM batteries. The gen stays home now.No more stinky fuel.
This fan is very welcome when there's no breeze and very sticky humid.
Position 3 is very strong, lovely and I can direct air flow anywhere I need.

Hi Mick,
Thanks for the reply. We ordered the extraction fan vent from Jayco today at a cost of $110. You have to buy the whole vent but that is ok as we can keep the old one for spare parts. It only runs on 12v but I doubt it will draw much power.
We had a fly over for our tent top camper which worked really well. I was just wondering if you left a gap between the top of the camper and the fly over, how do you reduce the amount of movement from the wind?
Will let you know how the new vent goes once it has arrived and is fitted.
Cheers,
Michelle
