I simpathise with you as my youngest is now getting up at between 4 and 5:30 every day even when not camping. It is that bad that even why she is not home I cant sleep in as I am accustomed to it now :(

As for dark tents have you tried a heavy weight canvas tent with an additional fly over it??

Cheers Kev

Hi,

I am new to camping in Oz so really unaware as to the best way to go we live in QLD so it is hot most of the time we had a cheap oz trail tent and it was too light. That was our first expedition and I fell in love with camping again. I have a seen the Black Wolf Tough Dome is really dark inside but has no sections which is what we want functional but dark. I am going to patent the idea I think :) I could do with an army tent :) My daughter is nearly 3.

Do you know a good functional canvas one?

I have a Freedom Canvas Family Tourer. My youngest just turned 3 so she has been waking early for awhile now. We have since upgraded to a Trak Shak camper so she is able to get out of bed and occupy herself for a short period before I get up with her.

QLD isn't hot, it is a beautiful climate LOL

Cheers Kev

An Army 11x11 with blackouts would be the way to go ;-)

14' x 14' would be better with that many kids LOL

We have a oztrail canvas cabin tent that is very dark, so much so I am having trouble getting up at first light to go fishing. It also has a superb sunroom which is great on wet days.

Sothern Cross make minute tents & family tourers out of 14 oz canvas & are the darkest I've seen.

We got an OZTRAIL tent thgis year. I think it is a tourer 9 or something like that It's the square one where you peg the corners & put a single pole up in the midle inside. It's as black as a bats bum. Need a light in it during the day. Cost us about $320, is made of canvas & weighs all up 18kg.

If you know it is going to happen why not plan for it.

We have camped with our children since they were less than a year old. My son in particular has always been an early riser. We did try keeping him up late but it didn't work. He still woke with the birds and just caught up with an afternoon nap.

We gave up modifying his behaviour and modified ours. When he went to bed so did we. The result was that we started getting up earlier. We were on the road travelling earlier in the cool of the day and had time to stop for a swim or a cool drink when it got hot.

The other option is to double team the kid. Take turns at getting up and taking them for a walk. You will be amazed at what you see on those early morning walks.

Our kids are now late teens and we all stay up way to late these days.

Same here, we went to bed just after the kids.
But we did notive the difference when we changed tents for one with a lighter roof.
Cooler in summer, but up earlier. :o)
