I hope this is informative for people seeking respite from heat in canvas campers. I have a Goldsteam camper trailer fitted with a 1.5Hp Truma air conditioner which is housed under the bed and ducted to three points.
During the recent high temperatures, the unit operated very
well up to about 29c. On this particular day it reached a ceiling of 38c and the air conditioning unit was really struggling after that. It was also very noisy, and I had to turn it off to get a good night’s sleep. I’ve found a small fan is far more beneficial than an air conditioner during the night.
If you go bush you’ll also need to give some thought to the size of the generator needed to run an air conditioning unit. My 2KVA Honda does it without any trouble, but you need to be mindful that every gadget can’t be run at once.
Would I do it again if I was to order another canvas camper trailer? Perhaps not.
Regards
Kim

G'Day Kim,
We've stayed in both our windup camper (a Goldstream too) and an air-conditioned full van in hot weather. The wind-up with the marjority of the windows open is a much nicer place to be than a van with an A/C fighting hard! IMO of course.
Cheers, Nige

In our camper trailer we only ever used a fan. We had a shade sail that we hung over the trailer to shade it from direct heat (would drop the temp inside by 10-15 deg) then put the fan on at night with windows open for air movment. This worked really
well for us. The worst we had was constantly 40-45 in
Darwin. We also camped under a tree when possible for shade. In the cooler areas we fan a small fan heater which we often had to turn off as the trailer got too hot. When we were bush we did not have power so just used spray bottles of
water.
