Have just has a drama with my Hema Navigator. When turned on a few days ago it could not find the maps for the GPS and when I tried to run the street navigator program the screen said basically to reinstall the software.

Tried recharging it fully and pressing reset button to no avail. The unit had been treated very carefully and had not been connected to a computer nor had the SD card been removed before the problem.

I have used quite a few SD cards and SDHC cards for a few years in cameras and computers and have not experienced a card failure before. But I have heard they can occur.

After reflecting on the problem for a few days I decided to remove the card and check it out using the computer. Before placing in in my SDHC reader I moved the write protect switch to write protect as I did not want to alter the SD card in any way. The computer could see the card but it reported it as empty.

I am presently running a diagnostic program and it has identified thousands of files so far and it is pretty clear that the file structure is corrupted. My rough guess is the SD card has self destructed somehow.

Anyone know if is is possible to reinstall the software on to another card? It does not look like there is a CD/DVD for the 4WD GPS program in the box, only one for the street navigator program. If I get a replacement card from Hema can it be backed up onto another card so that a spare is available so the unit can stay in use even if there is another SD card failure? I have an 8 gig Sandisk Extreme III SDHC available that could be used.

Looks like I will have to visit the dealer (again).

Every time I upgrade to a new GPS the first thing I do as soon as it's out of the box is connect it to the PC and make a full file backup for it and store it on the hard drive and also make a CD copy,
Yes you could have made a copy of the files on another SD card when you bought it,

Flynnie,
Contact HEMA directly through Support on their website. They have brilliant after sales service and would be your best option as they know everything there is to know about your Navigator and will sort it quickly for you.

Thanks to all of you for your help.

I should have been less timid with the unit and backed up the SD card straight away. I will take it to the dealer and ask if they can do something.

On the Hema Navigator website is this.

"FAQ's

Having trouble with your Hema Navigator? Please read through the FAQ section as many questions have already been answered.
General Hema Navigator Questions::

Q: Who do I contact for support?
A: Contact the retailer the purchase was made from.............."

So that's what I will do. The dealer was very helpful when the first unit failed and expect they will be again. This time I think it is an SD card failure and not the main unit. So if it comes back fixed I will do a backup on to the computer and onto a spare SDHC card, confirm that the unit can work with both cards and keep the spare in the vehicle for when it is needed.

The tally so far is one failed unit, one failed 12 volt car charger (second unit) and probable SD card failure (second unit). It would be good if the thing just worked.
