Codan is a brand of HF radio used for long range communications.

I guess you are talking about the HF radio aerials that have a big loading coil at the base so that the radio 'sees' them as a much longer aerial.

A new HF radio with aerial and aerial tuner is about $3500

I haven't heard so much 'bad' reports of Uniden but have heard many say the GME units are superior. I have an old GME tx3000 that I'm more than happy with.
Cheers,
Justin

I'd second that. I have a GME 3400 with remote head and it's excellent. My kids bought it for us before we drove to Broome and beyond because they were worried about some of the places we would be going to, and it gave them a bit of peace of mind.
They were well advised I think as it's proved a good buy.
And it's made in Australia which is a big plus in my mind.

I will go against the trend as I have a Uniden UH088 and found it to be an excellent radio. I went with a mate on a long trip recently and he had a GME Tx 3200 and I thought it wasn't the best radio for features and its reception of weak stations to be poor however this could have been an aerial problem.
The UH013 is the very basic radio and you may be disappointed with the lack of features. I bought the UH088 because of the front speaker and have since found the Group Scan to be an excellent feature when you are travelling with someone but the raise and lower buttons to be a pain when changing stations, this is one advantage that the GME has over the Uniden.
Remember to get a good aerial as this will set you back $60 for a 6DB ground independent one.

Hi Pauly, I bought a UH013 & being an older person have found the screen & writing to be quite hard to read at times, especially when mobile. The control buttons are quite small also. It works fine though. Cheers Tim

Paul, no personal expweriancce with Uniden, but have heard they can wander off channel. I own a GME 3400 and am happy with it (and the extra 10 programmable channels)
