suggest you buy two books from the EO shop : "Priceless campsites & rest areas NT", and "Priceless campsites & rest areas North WA."

These books are excellent - not only for finding camp sites not listed in major publications, but ever more so for the tourism advice which is more useful and detailed than any tourism brochures. We planned our WA and NT parts of our recent trip courtesy Jan Holland. We really missed her when we got to Qld

Pilbara60, i purchased the set of three (SW of WA, NW of WA and NT) from the bookshop here at ExplorOz. Buy enough books and it will pay for your membership.

It depends on what type of camping you want to do and how long you want to take to get to Katherine. I have done the trip heaps of times from Karratha to Darwin in the 2 week school holidays but most trips we are trying to get to Darwin as quickly as possible and then have 8 or 9 days there relaxing. When we do the trip we drive Karratha - Roebuck Plains Roadhouse, then Kununnurra, then Darwin - not much stopping on the way...

A couple of nice places that we have camped at on various trips are:Barn HillFitzroy River Lodge Campground - both close to the main road so not much of a detour...

Have a great trip!!
