im in the throws of buying another vehicle and would like to ask about fuel consumption for the diesel troopys...
im not sure what i will end up spending but the consumption from something that wuld cost around 15 would be a good start...
also, how likely is it going to be for me to get a turbo

The factory turbo 6cyl troopies (HDJ78) ran from 2001 to 2006.
The normally aspirated diesels (HZJ75 and HZJ78) ran from 1990 to 2006. The 78 series with coil front end came out in 1999.
Lots of people fit aftermarket turbos to the 1Hz motor. I personally wouldn't touch a troopie with aftermarket turbo. Pick of the bunch is the HDJ78.
Fuel consumption - official figures were about 11.9 l/100k for the factory TD and about 13.0 l/100k for the 1Hz.
Real life figures are about this mark, until you start adding fat tyres, roofracks and weight.

Hiya Phil
Wots the gripe over 'aftermarket' turbos on 1Hz motors ??
From personnal experience, NO problems after many (many) kms trouble free !!
And the same reports from others !!
Supposedly (and I'm no expert) a better proposition for performance, efficiency and reliability that the 'factory' job.

I fitted an after market
water cooled turbo to my 1HZ at 100,000 ks and have now done over 280,000 ks without any drama, best money, ($3,250) I ever spent IMHO.

Glad that you guys have done OK, but there's plenty of others who haven't.
Feel free to google each of the following and see what comes up:
- 1Hz cracked piston
- 1Hz precombustion chamber cracked
- 1Hz overheating
and in the 1999-2006 HZJ78, you also have the small R151F gearbox, which is more likely to have problems when you put the extra power through it.
Thats why its my opinion that "I personally wouldn't touch a troopie with aftermarket turbo". But I accept your point of view.
Cheers
Phil

with the HDJ78 aare there any obvious signs of engine wear??
Also considering a 3.0litre hilux with a prefab camper on rear... but not real happy with exit angle...

Hi
I am lucky enough to own a 2008 Troopy with a Kea Pop Top conversion, and to that I have had fitted it out with almost all the goodies.
On my last trip ,quoting from the dairy, travelling around 110ks into a strong wind 13.4 lt to a 100ks.(Apologies to Scubby, almost have had time to sort out the numbers on the calculator)
From Brdsville to
Innamincka via Allabury 11.8 lt to a 100ks, hardly got over 80ks, corrugations and gibbers, 600 odd Ks of a long and rough road, never saw another vehicle. Dropped 69.80 Lt into he main
tank $130 odd $ along with the Iced Coffee @
Innamincka
I am quite happy with that fuel wise.
Not so sure about the shocks though.

I would say from my experience that Richard Kovacs figures are exactly right.

I've kept them from year dot, only about two stuff ups when the battery was disconnected and lost the speedo reading, now it doesn't matter as the NavNet records everywhere I go so I can check the k's
I'm that bad I ever know how much money I've spent on fuel.. sad hey. LOL
Cheers

My Cruiser Trayback used to get around 1200kms per 180L, sitting on speeds between 100km-115km/h. Its impossible to get a real figure unless you have an inline meter on your fuel lines isnt it, as i reckon i still had about 15litres to go when dial was on empty on main
tank. All other Cruisers i know of average this also sitting on the speed limit or a touch more. Of course the less k's and better condition the engine/fuel system is in the better it will be.
On another note though, drove a brand new Troopie today, straight from the toyota yard, travelled 500kms and it would of used 75Litres. Pretty bleep poor i would have thought. Only sitting on 110km/h. Bloody awesome grunt though, and i dont mind the new dash.
Not really built for economy the Troopies and Traybacks, but driven properly they can go a long way without a top up.
