Hi Gang,
I know this has nothing to do with 4wd but I have a 2005 Camry 2.4L petrol, auto and it is starting to use alot of petrol.
We normally have been getting 9.5 to 10L per 100km (28mpg) but now it has dropped to around 14Lper 100km (20 mpg).
Driving has not changed but fuel has. We do use the Air Con but no more than usual, as fuel consumptsion has been getting worse over the past 4 or 5 months.
We have just had the car serviced eg, all new filters oil plugs etc and mechanic said all was fine.
Any idea's would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
David

Could be dirty injectors. Try some injector cleaner in the next couple of tanks of fuel. Can be a reasonable cheap fix.
I use Proma in both our diesel and petrol vehicles (different type for each).
Although some may not believe in this product I do and have used it for years with good results.
Proma Link.
And I have no affiliation with this company just a satisfied customer.

Hi,
Get your thermostat checked, it may be staying wide open, not allowing the engine to get hot enough. This tricks the ECU into over fueling in the belief the engine is cold.
Good luck,
Steve.

Dave,
could be lots of things, Maf meter, oxygen sensor, knock sensor and on and on.
I believe the best way is to have the problem diagnostic computerised tune up gear that mechanical shops now use.
In the long run it maybe far cheaper to go that way than try and guess what the problem is.
14l/h from a Camry is definitely not the norm.

Faulty EGO sensor can cause exess fuel consumption, Easy to check with a Jaycar kit KC5195 $16.95 Fuel mixture display you conect to the Exhust Gas Oxy sensor used to use one of these at work very handy & cheep.

Are you using E10 instead of unleaded. That would be close to the difference you are experiencing.
Cheers

A basic thing that tricks/traps a lot of people is tyre pressure. If you've allowed your tyres to run at a lower PSI than previously, then your economy will suffer. As a general rule you should run higher tyre pressures than those recommended by the car manufacturer; by about 10 to 15%.
Good luck.

Did the "all new filters ...etc." include the air filter ?
Did you check that this was in fact changed ? (apart from "the mechanic said all was fine")
And, as Roachie said, check your tyre pressures...

Hi Ed,
Yep all done, the mechanic that i use shows all the old part that come off the car.
I know the are the parts off it as I mark all the item so I know they have been done. (Got caught many years ago and still mark things to make sure the do it)
Also my mechanic always lets me know what he is doing before he does it.
Thanks for your help,
David

OK, that's the simple stuff outa the way ;-)
As suggested above, might be time to hook 'er up to the diagnostic machine...
How long since the O2 sensor was changed ?
I'm led to believe that this is considered a "consumable" (in much the same way that spark plugs are consumables), ans once they "go off" can have a detrimental effect on fuel use...
Might be worth changin' it anyway if it hasn't been done for a while, and see if it makes a difference ;-)

If any sensors are faulty they should bring your engine check light on, if the light has not been on I would be checking the thermostat is not stuck open as this will cause high fuel comsumption as said above.

Does the car blow black smoke out of the exhaust?
Has the fuel consumption increased slowly or has it just jumped at once from 9.5 to 14 L/100 Km?

Hi David,
I forgot to ask: Has your oil consumption increased as
well in the last 4-5 months?

No the oil consumption has not changed.
Nothing else has changed at all, car still goes very
well, runs smooth no smoke or oil usage at all.
Also looks like thermostat is working fine as have checked with motor running and can see it open when
water starts to flow in radiator and you can feel the pressure in the hoses as
well.
looks like l will have to get the sensors all checked.
Thanks again,
David
