The million dollar refurbishment and upgrade of the
Peterborough Steamtown
Heritage Rail Centre was opened this evening. The festivities continue on Saturday and Sunday with a busy event schedule ahead
New buildings. a Light Show in one of the carriages, rail displays, tours and viewing of the only working 3 gauge
turntable in the world can be seen here.
In its heyday
Peterborough saw more than 100 trains through the rail centre per day. Today however there are only 8 trains per day passing through. The Indian Pacific train passes through 4 times per week.
Sp when next you pass through
Peterborough, drop in and have a look and catch up on some history.
Cheers

Last time I was past there it looked totally deserted. There has been no news of this place in the railway magazines eg. Railway Digest, for yonks.
I was of the understanding that Steamtown had folded and that the narrow gauge track to Black Rock had been condemned and was going to be lifted.
Did they have anything in steam or was it just static exhibits?

Richard
'Last time' is history :-)
The narrow gauge to Eurelia has been removed though due to the insurance crises of a few years ago. The rail was sold to the Tasmanian Government. This money, together with Federal and State grant funding, has contributed to the new Museum,
carpark and other improvements. AFAIK there are still working steam engines.
Why don't you drive down for a visit?
Cheers

There are alas, are no longer any steam engines working at
Peterborough.
If you want to ride behind a steam engine in SA, you need to go to
Quorn and ride the Pichi Richi Railway.
Cheers,
Dion.

Its a matter of applying the right word to the sentence
I said working steam engines .i.e operational steam engines which could work if fired up.
You are right however...there are no longer engines working at Steamtown. I am not sure if there is a long term plan to fire up engines to ride the local rail or whether the static display will remain as is.
Pichi Richi still operates steam driven trains from Stirling to
Quorn on a regular basis.

Willem,
none of the steam engines at Steamtown, 2 x ex WAGR W class, 1 x ex WAGR PMr class and the SAR T199 are unfortunately not in a state to be fired up and operated which is a shame.
Steamtown have a further 12 months accreditation to operate MIC127 only.
bty PRR operates steam trains between
Quorn and
Port Augusta,
Stirling North as a terminus was passed in 2000 when the track into
Port Augusta was completed.
Cheers,
Dion.

Luckily I stated AFAIK in the post above. I last rode on the Eurelia Express was back in 2001. I was under the impression that the engines were still in operational mode but must confess to not being a train buff and having little knowledge of the firing processes
Are you a local
Peterborough resident?

I was in
Peterborough on Saturday, formally invited in my capacity of VP of PRRPS. I don't live in
Peterborough, but 80
miles up the road.
I was lucky enough to be on the engine that formed the last through movement from
Peterborough to
Quorn in 1986.
Cheers,
Dion.

I'm going down to P.P. by rail in the next couple of weeks, we'll probably get placed into
the loop at
Peterborough, so if time permits I'll walk over & have a quick squize.
But seriously the last time I went past the place was locked up and deserted.

Hi Willem,
The main trunk line passes right behind my workshop here in
Northam.
The Indian Pacific, Freight trains and also huge Grain trains all pass by and are a wonderful sight from 20 metres away.
Theres something about Trains that brings out the lad in me and I envy the bloke up front at the controls.
As in most
places, the hey day of rail travel has long since gone, but we have a bunch of dedicated people trying to restore whats left of the old Station, associated buildings, couple of old engines and relics from the past.
The Shire does help with some funding, no where near the million mark, but the bulk comes from local donations and support.
Still got a lot of WA to see before we cross any borders but if and when I start buying maps of SA,
Peterborough will be on the list.
Thanks Willem,
Lionel.

Lionel, I smiled when you commented "Trains bring out the lad in me" and somhow it would appear to most men, (Did you read what Warren Buffet said?) feel.
I was talking to one of the drivers on the Indian Pacific and he told me that at 52 years of age he was the "baby" of the drivers. Seems they struggle to get people to train and some just walk out in the first week. No "stick your job" or anything. They just leave.

Hi Willem,
Great to see that upgrade has finally happened. Had some involvement with the rail land in
Peterborough when I worked for Transport and the upgrade was in the pipeline when I decided to leave.
There's more to
Peterborough than most people realise. A lot just look at the remnants of the station and keep going.
The Dowds
Hill tunnel would have to be one of the best kept secrets.
Will definitely be up to have a look soon.

Willem...G'Day
There's big plans in the wind for the Rail Precinct here too. Old building renovations , but the big one is a plan to re open the old line through to
Snake Creek, using the old bridge , they're going to get a steam Loco and some carraiges and run tourists to
Snake Creek and back.
