Hi Folks,
Probably a stupid question, but should the centre diff lock always engage when I use low range?
The diff lock switch has no effect when in low range, but the light always comes on, which may be correct, but is contrary to the Toyota manual.
Just trying to understand all the bits and pieces!
regards,
Vic

G'day Vic,
Yeah mate the centre diff lock is supposed to automatically engage when you select low range. The switch is there on the dash so that you have the opportunity of locking the centre diff when in high range. I have only used it a couple of times for slippery uphills when I wanted the momentum of high range.

You can pull the plug off the tranfer case and have the centre diff lock operate manually with the push of the button in hi and low range. This is of real benefit when manouvering a boat, caravan or trailer around the place.

Mr Desmo, yes it does work on an 80 series aswell. Checkout the tech pages of www.lcool.org to get the proceedure, should take 5 minutes to do. The only 80's that are an exception to the rule are the ones equipt with ABS, which have no ctr diff switch on the dash.
Buying one (switch) and installing it in the dash not only makes it possible to have constant low range, but also makes it possible to disable ABS in highrange when on dirt roads etc.
One downfall of doing this mod is getting stuck because you forgot to lock the ctr diff after pulling lowrange lever, worse still if a Disco driver has a video camera handy :-)
