If you are like me and insects are the scurge of camping, I have descovered a new Bug Zapper.Well it probably has been around but it is new to me.

I should mention here that it is 240 volt so most likely suitable for caravans with inverters.

Rather than Zap the bugs with electricity, it has a fan that blows insects into a capture tray. The tray below the UV light is filled with water and detergent. Just clean out the tray and you are ready to go again.

The zapper is light weight, does not use much power and has a light so bright it can also be used for a security light at night. You do not however get that "Zzzzzz" noise which makes me feel like I am getting back at them. Image Could Not Be Found about $89

Don't be disappointed if you don't 'catch' any mosquitos.

Several trials have shown that they aren't attracted to the ultra violet zappers, in one test they wrapped the unit with clear sticky back with the adhesive side out, & didn't catch one mosquito, just moths, flies & beetles.

That's right - mosquitoes are attracted by heat and Carbon Dioxide.

Pros: Picks up midges & sandies as well...mossies less so

Cons: Fan is quite loud [yes...its subjective] will rattle with non-sine wave inverters..needs to be placed some distance way from site [brings in moths etc]....liquid should be replaced every few days.....PONGS
Unfortunately it kills the good bugs as well...eg praying mantis

I like the snap crackle and pop of the traditional bug zapper.

I would love to find a zapper that takes out mozzies effectively.

Around home I am using the fly traps now available at Bunnings and they are very effective ( BUT THEY DO STINK )

As they are quite expensive I have started modifying plastic soft drink bottles and use the attractant bait in them to lure flys.

We have an insane number of blow flys here ;-(

Hi Carl & Pamela,

On initial inspection I dont think the water tray would be big enough to catch the hordes of insects that the light would attract.

only thing that attracts mosquitoes is carbon dioxide
you may find far better than any bug zapper is to use the bright white leds. bright white leds attract few bugs and appear to keep bugs away.
