I'v bee looking round at late 90's and early 20's troopys...
Of the 6 i am a start on, 3 have gearbox's replaced or repaired
This is really scary...
is there a way to tell if they are on there way out?
which models should i stay away from?
the landcruiser's i remember (70's - 90's) didnt have gearbox issues... i thought they were safe buying....

The HZJ 75 or up to 10/99 box was fine, the HZJ 78/79 or 11/99 onwards were a crap gearbox, I rebuilt one 3 times in 2 years.
Cheers Steve.

As above with the 1HZ non factory turbo models, the factory turbo ones had a good gearbox h151 I think is the gearbox model from the turbos.

The gearbox is the R151F and is based on an old Supra gearbox.
Its also used in the 4 cyl coil sprung Landcruiser 70 series,Prados and Hiluxes.
Just too small for the big landcruisers

They did make some upgrades to improve its longevity in 2001 or thereabouts.

Ihave the 2001 model Troopy and had the upgrade and so far no problems over some very rough stuff.Ithink you have to be unlucky to have a problem but the upgrade gives a lot of piece of mind if you are going bush.It cost me $800.

The NA 1HZ also had problems with them flogging the splines out on the main shaft and transfer input gear.
Mine was a 90 model and I rebuilt it every 100k, they continued to have the same problem
well into the 90's like 95 or 6 were still having the same problem.

G'day Peter, Yep, like you I've had the transfer case rebuilt twice on my 94 1HZ, once at 100 thou and then at 200 thou and now at 275 thou I have a noisy main gearbox, it's making whirring noises which come and go, bit of a worry, I should have updated a while ago methinks. Engine is fine however.

A modified transfer case input gear that takes advantage of the gearbox output shaft splines that would drive a pto winch and a spacer that does not do much is available from a mob in
Melbourne and I think Don Kyatt Spares or Marks Adaptors do one as
well. Saves changing the main gearbox shaft with all the costs that go with that job.

As I understand the situation;
If the Troopy has coil springs then you need to look at the gearbox numbers to see if it is one of the ones that needs to be modified. If you have leaf springs then you are ok.
