I am trying to locate Temple Bar Caravan Park allegedly on Ilparpa Rd Alice Springs. Unfortunately, I have conflicting coordinates for this caravan park none of which show it to be on this road, so can someone confirm which is closest?

Lat. S23.76233 Long. E133.78529 (ExplorOz / Places) or
Lat. S23.7611 Long. E133.829846 Gary Stratton.com

thanks WBS

Hi,
The first one is nearly correct,
the second is about 5 k out, i think that is the kart trak.
Temple Bar allows dogs, so that is how I recall it.

Go West down Ilparpa Rd about 8.6 Klm , turn off left , down through Roe creek and your there.
Also this post of yours provides it's own link to PLACES . click on it.

Doug

Some time ago, the then owner of that park, his name has slipped from my memory now, had an interesting theory about an impact crater which encompassed the whole of Central Australia, virtually. Do you recall that at all?

I don't think there's been an Impact that would have taken all of Inland Australia, , I think the one you would have heard of was Gosses Bluff,

Hmmm Doug.

Gosse is old hat. I have even climbed around the perimeter of Gosse/Tnorala.

I thought that maybe with your interest in impact sites that you would have heard of it. This fella who owned that park was trying to convince all and sundry about CometAlice, as he named it. This event goes back to circa 1993.

I have googled a few pages but have drawn a blank so far

As Doug said - go to the places link created by the system for Temple Bar Caravan Park and when on the page change the Base Map to Satellite view and zoom in and you will even see the vans parked in the bays.....

You will also see photos of the park and a whole heap of other information about the place. Also you can add information if you have any to add.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply.

I did look at Places and saw the area David has pointed out and that Doug has also given an accurate distance to but prior to that I was given alternative coordinates which placed it elsewhere (about 5 km west of the Stuart Hwy) hence my confusion.

I should have known better than to doubt the info on this site.

Hi WBS

Even without coordinates it is so easy to find. We spent over two weeks there all up last year and got to love the place after the initial shock at seeing the older style amenities block, but the price was also antiquated to match. Nice big grassy sites - a contrast to the squeezy town parks near busy roads. It is also a pet friendly park. We planned to stay again this year, taking the short cut from the West MacDonnells through 'Honeymoon Gap', and were devastated when the owner told us she was fully booked. It was Show weekend coming up - a bad time to get to Alice. We went to one of the town parks for a week and hated it. A lovely modern amenities block, but a severely overcrowded park with numbers far too great for the facilities. Enjoy the quiet and pleasant surroundings at Temple Bar.

HI MH, that's a wonderfully tactful euphemism about the older style amenities. The gents was ##### and the ladies #########. A pity because as you said, the sites were shady and grassy, the birdlife was wonderful at sunset and those ghost gums magnificent. A decent clean and all would be well..... WBS you have been warned.... Warrie

Yes Warrie, after the initial impression of the amenities, as i said we grew to love the place. We went back after touring around for another few days. With the nice out of town location and the community feel that developed amongst the semi-permanents there, it was a safe and pleasant place to stay. The owner does not want to upgrade, hence charges accordingly, around half the price of town parks. This year we were devastated when we couldn't get in, and did not enjoy the park we then went to, despite a very good amenities block.
