In the latest edition of 4wd Action, on the free DVD there is a section on how to drive on sand etc etc etc. Anyway in it is the new D max and the fella who races them in the rallys.

When he goes to lower his pressures he uses a ARB product i have never seen before. Its got a little thingamajig that clips/screws onto the valve by the looks and releases all the air, and it comes with a large style gauge with big numbers that plugs into thingamajig to read the pressure. I have looked all over the net for this product but cant find anything on it, not even on ARB site. Its similar to EZ deflator but the gauge is detachable from the deflator.

It looks like it might be the ducks nuts and just what im after. Have a look at it if you get the mag as i reckon it might be the new kid in town. Pretty much the same as the EZ deflator really, but i like this style better, might even be quicker.

That D Max sure does look like its got some go too. Looks like it has more grunt then a Hilux and Triton in the sand.

Cheers

Kroozer,

The only criticism I have is the it is a bit fiddly to first screw the device onto the valve stem because it is smooth brass and a bit small for oafish fingers.

Otherwise, releasing the valve, deflating and measuring the pressure are all very easy. It is beautifully made from solid brass, and the pressure gauge looks as tough as any I have seen. And unlike a lot of gear, the scale is in PSI and the commonly achieved pressures spread the whole diameter of the dial (and are not squeezed in to the lowest 5% where you need to wear glasses to discern 10 PSI steps!)

It took me less than two minutes to do a tyre the other day, once I had a practice go, which took about three minutes.

Damn straight! Whats the point in car tyre gauge reading to 300psi! Sorry that that really bugs me big time!

I withdraw my criticism above. You don't grab the device where I did. There is a knurled section outboard from the sliding bit which is very easy to handle. I just did a tyre then and it took about 30 seconds,

Its a wonderful piece of kit.Image Could Not Be Found

I agree with you Bob, they are good, but I would like a slightly larger diameter piece to turn on the fitting. I have had one for some months. It was interesting a few months ago when three vehicles stopped and everyone got out to use their ARB deflators. De rigeur.

The middle section isn't easy to turn against the resistance of an internal 'O' ring. I think I may just use some super glue to stick on some 'O' rings side by side, giving a larger diameter.

$60? $70?
The real benefit (compared with the Straun) is that you can see the pressure as you deflate without having to remove to measure with a seperate gauge.

Staun make a good set as well,

I use them when I'm"in a hurry" and doing a quick arvo 4x4 trip or need to get to a fishing spot so its easier to put em on and down they go.

For serious continous offroad stuff(crossing simpson) I do it manually.

I have found that my Strauns are so unreliable that I rarely use them. Apart from being a pain in the **** to set in the first place, more often than not they either let way too much air out or not enough. On a couple of occassions when I have aired down for sand (I have the Strauns set at 18psi) they have let the tyre pressure down to below 10psi before shutting off. So out comes the compressor to re-inlate and this is before I hit the sand.

Ive got a similar one made by Bushranger Bought it at an Anaconda shop for $34 in a little nylon case and all.

Just screw it on and push the barrel towards the tyre and it deflates.

The ARB one does the same but is about $64

I think Kroozer is talking about a different and NEW product. It sounds like everyone here is talking about the EZ-Deflator and similar, but the way I understand it is that Kroozer saw something different.

Either that or I'll just shutup and get back under my rock.
