I have a small car which needed a 40,000 k service. I rang 2 dealerships that sold the type of car. 1st quote was $350 the 2nd quote was $480, for the exact same service (no other work required). The 2 dealership are about 50k's apart, they are in the country but not remote by any means.
How does that work????

I will leave the make and model out of it at the moment.

Why go to a dealership, any qualified ,registered MTA mechanic can do warranty
service on your car. My local garage bloke services my Peugeots for $140 &
that includes filters & oil, An extra $20 gets my Hilux & Jackaroo serviced as well.
Not sure if your 40k service requires special attention, but I doubt it. Or are we
talking Merc or BMW here...I would shop around.....oldbaz.

I get my MB serviced for $120 and that includes being vacuumed inside, tyres checked and a written report.
Been to them for 20 years and every person I have recommended gets the same treatment.

Question for Brian Perdue.-

I'd be curious about the location of such an opportunity.

Gotta agree Baz, but the problem I know with BMWs they have no resale unless dealer serviced.

I am the only B. Purdue in the phone book. If I am not home (or busy) leave a message after the beep and I will phone you later.

You might be the only B Purdue in your local area but there's about 7 throughout Australia - LOL

Unfortunately none near me so my question is irrelevant.

Thanks anyhow Brian - sorry for the trouble.

like oldbaz said if its a BMW or something i could almost understand that

Your are better off just going to a normail garage and getting it done, as long as he can stamp your book its all sweet still.

Cheers

Its only an every day car, I just rang a independent company that does this and keeps the warranty in tack. There price was $230.

Thanks for the advice Tukka and Oldbaz

That $ disparity is nothing unusual - and don't think they won't try and 'jack up' the costs by the time you get back there to pick the car up ! As the others say, small accredited car servicing business often have a strategy for taking business from these dealerships - their formula is usually based on straight talk, fair trading and value for money :-o).

It is called business. The market takes what the customer will pay.

So it pays to shop around unless you are going back to where you purchased the car.

Major services for our Xtrail range from $350 to $450

Pays to read their invoices closely.

One inflation strategy is to replace your wiper blades regardless, add windscreen washer, and cost the oil at a retail 4l drum rate.

And look at the labour rates. They can range from $40 an hour to over a $100.

I do my own oil and filter changes and keep a record. In part because the Forester intervals are 12,500 km and that's not enough when it's towing.
