the latest WOW 'cattledog' in Darwin is showing the Acer 10.1" Netbook with windows XP, 1GB ram, 160GB Hard Drive and WiFi for $399 after $49 Cash Back. Is this good value?

If so, then I'll get one to run OziExplorer and email on trips.

Fred, that's a bargain.

I've got the 9" screen with 120gb HDD and it cost a lot more than that.

No internal disc drive, but there are ways around that.

Buy it mate.

I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy

Hi,
As Gone Bush says, that is a bargain. You will probably need an external DVD , but they are available , just plug and play.
We have a small notebook, and plug in our 15" LCD monitor, and DVD, and it gets us up and running.

Sorry to put a dampener on a good deal, but I purchased a brand new Acer (12" screen) a few years ago. At 13 months old the hard drive died and they would not honour any kind of warranty on the parts- while I can understand this, I think the quality of the computer was totally crud.

On the other hand, if you are only going to use it for computer mapping and won't be giving it a regular workout, you might be just fine. You'll need an external DVD drive to load the maps and software though- how much do these cost?

The ASUS EEPCs start at not much more money. I'd personally be tempted by one of these first.

I just use another computer and load software onto a pen drive and load it into the netbook with that.

Saves buying a DVD drive.

That of course may be cheaper if you dont have a second machine.

Cheers

Bargain mate. I'm typing this on a 5 year old Acer travelmate 12" that I use to run OziExplorer when on the move. Been very reliable.

We prefer the Toshiba Satellite as the most durable for travelling. Also need good ram and hard drive space and DVD burner. I just got a 15" for around $499 plus $48 shipping (details a bit hazy as i am working on something else at the mo'). A catch of the day from TopBuy.

HI Steve

You did better than me, with free freight, but was it new or re-furbished?

G'day Motherhen

Brand spanker

Pretty happy with it. I wasn't really going to buy 1 just yet, but couldn't let it go at that price. The only issue is that TNT have lost the Mouse. Don't know why it was in a separate box, but it will turn up

I've got a 10 inch netbook for travel and work. You need magnifying glasses to view a screen full of writing. Just have a good look at it before you commit.

Great machine otherwise.

you must need glasses.
have a 10.1" Aldi laptop and love it. Seldom use the 15" laptop now.
not an issue reading a full screen of text.

Change the screen resolution then and it will look the same as a big monitor

Mine is at 1024 x 768 and its good

Otherwise change the font size to large

Gday Graham,
Mine is a Sony Vaio. When you choose the lower screen resolutions, it distorts (goes from 16:9 to 4:3) and everything looks fat. The large font size changes don't apply to many programs or the internet, so I gave up and just hold it closer :-)

Thanks everyone,
but I bought one with 3 year warranty.(bit extra for the extra 2 years) All parts and labour. So after I have used it on a few trips I'll let you know how it goes.

Have a look at the Asus EeePC. I'm in the US this week and Amazon have the 1005 for around US$330. You can upgrade to a 250Gb hard drive, add externals etc. Saw one at the conference this week and looks good. Claimed battery life is 10 hours.

Amazon delivery cost is $25.

I recently bought an Asus Eee pc 900ha
Upgraded the ram to 2 gig
Battery life is about 4.5 hours.
Good definition on the screen, very useful for email etc on the move
with a telstra plug in usb modem.
It is a delightful little machine with a 160gb hard drive as standard.
Runs windows XP
The sticker on the front says "5 hours battery life"
I think it will do that as long as all the power saving options are activated.
I just transfer data to it with a thumb drive, or simply send it to myself
by email from the office machine.
I paid $490 for it

Hi Fred B,

Can't help you with any experience with that model but something to consider when buying cheap electronics is has it been used as a shop demo or 'refurbished' after being returned under warrantee? Walk into most big stores and they have rows of computers and tv's running all day.

Harvey Norman had an advert in Saturday's West Australian for a 15.6" Compaq Presario with 2.1GHz and 250GB Hard drive, 2GB RAM, WiFi, DVD burner and Windows Vista Home Premium for $476 - how cheap is that!!

I've had my current Compaq now for 3 years come February and had no problems.... Compaq are the same company as HP, it's just more student focused.
